Remember when "voxels" were all the hype? Those of you old enough to remember voxels will probably do so because of Comanche: Maximum Overkill (NovaLogic, 1992). It is widely regarded as the first commercial game using that technology. Voxels, short for "volumetric pixels", are the 3D equivalent of 2D pixels - simply put. When Comanche was released, there was quite a lot of hype around it, being the first to divert from the much more common use of polygons for 3D worlds, not just in flight sims. Gameplay was more suitable for beginners, and maybe less appealing for flight sim veterans who expected more depth in terms of controls and missions (e.g. what the likes of Gunship 2000 had to offer). The game's relatively modest system requirements for its era also made it more appealing to the casual gamers, targeting 386 PCs, and making it accessible rather than "high-end".

This is very interesting. Because the rules pretty clearly stipulated the following. “I will invite Mutt to the Final Four to root for his beloved Huskies (not even sure he’s a real fan) on 1 condition and 1 condition only. Danny Hurley makes a personal video plea for him to attend. That and that alone will suffice. No video. No Mut. No problem.” I think most legal experts would say this is Mutt making a video with a Danny Hurley cameo in it.

Top 100 of 80s games or not? Personally, I think Archon (1983 by Free Fall Associates) is still one of the best and most unique games ever made. And above all, even 40+ years later it still has an incredibly high (re)playability level. Sure, the graphics and sound could be better - but the concept is timeless. I have no doubt it will still be remembered (and played) in 10, 20, maybe even 50 years from now. What made Archon special was - among other things - the mix chess-like strategic board play and real-time arcade combat in a way that felt revolutionary for its era. While pure chess games existed, none had taken them to the next level and mixed in action sequences like Archon did. As a result it probably attracted a lot more gamers than a pure chess game ever would have. The board features three types of squares: permanent light, permanent dark, and "changing" squares that switch between different shades (from bright to dark, including greens). Your unit's strength (hit points, damage, etc.) gets a boost when standing on a square matching its side's alignment during combat. Timing and tactics mattered to take full advantage of this feature. Also different from traditional chess were the win conditions: you had to eliminate all enemy units, or control the five special "power points" on the board. But the real kicker were the units that you controlled (or fought against). Unlike chess, white and black had asymmetrical units with distinct movement speeds/ranges, hit points, attack styles (projectiles, area effects, flight, etc.), and special powers. One of the best 2-player games ever for 8-bit systems back in the day. I always felt it would be a great project for a modern remake.
