That argument sounds neat on the surface, but it avoids the main issue, which is that politics is not only about policy documents, cabinet meetings and foreign affairs memos. Politics is also about image, legitimacy, access, proximity and the public faces that powerful people use to soften how they are seen. Nobody is claiming that Bien or Ombachi controls France’s foreign policy, because that would obviously be ridiculous. The argument is that powerful governments, presidents, embassies and political operators do not invite celebrities, athletes, chefs and influencers into these spaces by accident. They understand soft power very well. They know that one dinner may not rewrite foreign policy, but it can make power look normal, friendly, cultured, harmless and respectable to the public. That is why optics matter! On cancel culture, I agree that people should be allowed to hold different political opinions without being hunted, abused or threatened every time they disagree with the mob. But that principle must apply to everyone, not only when the people being questioned are people we like. The same online culture now being called toxic was built by people who taught the public that . You cannot build that kind of court for years, cheer when others are dragged before it, then suddenly start preaching nuance, grace and context when the same standard reaches your side. And yes, Kenya’s problems are systemic. Nobody serious believes that Ruto invented police brutality, corruption, tribal politics, elite arrogance, state capture, debt, impunity or the casual killing of innocent Kenyans. People were killed under Kibaki, people were killed under Uhuru, and people have been killed under Ruto. The system has been rotten for a long time, and pretending that everything began in 2022 would be dishonest. But saying the problem is systemic should not become a clever way of shielding the current person holding power. If Ruto inherited a bad system and then used it, protected it, benefited from it, rewarded it and allowed it to continue crushing ordinary Kenyans, then he is not an innocent passenger in that system. He is the man currently driving it. Ama? We can demand system change while still holding the man at the helm accountable. Those two positions do not contradict each other. In fact, you cannot seriously change a system while excusing the people currently using that system to govern, intimidate, tax, borrow, appoint, protect cartels and manage public anger. The real issue here is consistency. If proximity to power was treated as betrayal yesterday, then do not act shocked when people ask questions about proximity to power today. If context matters now, then context should have mattered when others were being cancelled. If people now want grace, nuance and freedom of opinion, then let that grace apply across the board, not only when the people under fire are celebrities, friends or favourites.
Mwafreeka@Mwafreeka

I’m not crying over anything. Just stating that: 1. Bien and Ombachi do not influence France foreign policy. Boycotting one dinner cannot change France foreign policy 2. Cancel culture is fueled by jealousy not principles. People should be allowed to have different political opinions without fear of cancellation. 3. Kenya problems are systemic so anyone who thinks Ruto has done anything new is suffering from selective outrage and is an insult to all the INNOCENT Kenyans gunned down from 2007 to 2022 by Kibaki and Uhuru We need to change the system not just the man at the helm.
