BREAKING: New never-before-seen view of the Moon’s Orientale Basin just released by the astronauts aboard Artemis II. This mission marks the first time in human history the entire basin has been seen with human eyes.
The Orientale Basin is a massive 600-mile-wide impact crater formed billions of years ago, with concentric rings that ripple outward across the lunar surface. It sits along the edge of the Moon, which is why it’s never fully visible from Earth and only appears partially at an angle.
The image was captured from aboard the Orion spacecraft, with sunlight cutting across the surface to reveal the basin’s structure. The image was transmitted back to Earth at the speed of light, delivered by laser communications using the Optical Communications System.
Next stop: the dark side of the Moon.
