My cousin Matthew died from an overdose about a decade ago. His birthday is coming up, and I just wanted to share a segment from my (future) book on him:
Page 60:
"I reconnected with my cousin Matthew who was always nice to me growing up. But he was suffering from a Substance Use Disorder too.
There were times when he called me a couple times a week just to bend my ear. Sometimes he would talk about how his relationship with his girlfriend was going. Other times, he reminded me of the nickname he gave me when we were kids, Lark. I didn’t think it would catch on, but soon everyone in our extended circle called me Lark.
What the fuck is a Lark? I hated it, whatever it was. When we were kids, he laughed when I cried to my mom and asked her what a Lark was.
“A songbird,” she said.

I’m excited to share that my breakout session has been accepted for EMPOWER 2026: the NAADAC Annual Conference.
I’ll be presenting “From ‘Inmate’ to ‘Expert’: Overcoming Imposter Syndrome in Peer Practice.”
Oh, I promise I’m friendlier than the presentation title sounds. 😇
But yes, even after someone rebuilds their life, finds recovery, earns degrees, and starts supporting others… the brain can still occasionally whisper: “Are you sure you’re supposed to be here?”
For many justice-involved individuals in recovery, imposter syndrome quietly follows them through early sobriety, reentry into work and community life, and even into professional helping roles like Peer Recovery Specialists.
This session will explore how those internal narratives show up, and how peer-informed approaches can help people challenge the belief that they don’t belong in the rooms they worked so hard to reach.
As a formerly incarcerated person in long-term recovery, a Peer Recovery Specialist in a jail diversion program, and a Georgetown graduate in Addiction Policy & Practice, this topic is both professional and deeply personal to me.
Grateful to @NAADACorg for the opportunity and looking forward to EMPOWER 2026.
If you’ll be attending, I’d love to connect. I’ll be the one quietly double-checking that I’m in the right room.

Why @RonDeSantis is a great Presidential candidate, 4/10:
Reactivation of the Florida State Guard & Emergency Response Capacity: In 2022, Ron DeSantis reestablished the Florida State Guard as a force multiplier for public safety, disaster response, and emergency operations. Under his oversight, the Guard grew, added operational units, and deployed in response to disasters both within and outside the state.

In real life, Peer Recovery looks like:
- gently sliding over coffee and saying, “stay here with me”
- saying eff it, I'll sit with you in this until the storm passes
- translating “I’m fine” into what’s actually happening beneath the surface
Grateful to do it alongside others who keep showing up and holding the light in these long, badly lit tunnels.

@SoberImposter Thank you for this Laura, I too feel like an imposter many times and have to use personal tricks to get through those feels that try to pull me down
