We live in a world where all the great writers of history - #Shakespeare, Plato, Chaucer, Victor Hugo, Dickens, Dante, Gibbon, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Byron, Trollope - - can all be read for free on your phone or tablet, because they're out of copyright. And people don't bother.

Before @midjourney banned me for outing their plagiarism and copyright infringement, I managed to get these. Notice I misspelled Scarlett Johansson, and it returned Matrix Resurrections imagery for the original Matrix. It infringes so hard, you don't even need to be accurate.

I don’t really care what the current law on this is, but we should be working to destroy copyright as thoroughly as possible so I am on OpenAI’s side in this case.

@FromHappyRock @Marn_nom Not sure I understand the question. Performing a song or play is also covered, so being public domain can mean more performances. Shakespeare's work was probably never covered by copyright law, I don't know, but the fact it's free is great for the world.

Honest question- has anything rich and compelling ever actually come from an iconic old work or design entering the public domain? Is it not just all derivative slush?

@alterstil I think Shakespeare’s work is too old to have ever been protected by a modern definition of copyright, but I take your point

@JoyceCarolOates imagine if nobody could use a neologism but the original crafter lol thankfully these words first written down by Shakespeare aren't covered by copyright any longer.

for instance, I often use the word "ineluctably" assuming that some, not many perhaps but some, can identify the source of this particularly word. (i.e., a Joycean source.) I would not consider this plagiarism, it is definitely homage since a Joyce is allowed to reference a Joyce

Works created centuries ago are already in that domain , meaning anyone can create using Shakespeare's characters or Beethoven's music. It allows mankind as a whole to eventually build on great works
