@bswagspeare #youtube just removed our video of our 2017 Richard III production because some lunatic claimed he owns the right for Shakespeare’s works. 😱 We submitted a counter notification but @YouTube refused it‼️Our video had over 80k views. Absolutely heartbroken. 💔 any advice?

We live in a world where all the great writers of history - #Shakespeare, Plato, Chaucer, Victor Hugo, Dickens, Dante, Gibbon, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Byron, Trollope - - can all be read for free on your phone or tablet, because they're out of copyright. And people don't bother.

@Ranguvar82 I’m so glad that the Bible’s copyright owner isn’t available, otherwise we wouldn’t have GO. Also, Jane Austen and Shakespeare ran out of their copyright, so we’re good

Before @midjourney banned me for outing their plagiarism and copyright infringement, I managed to get these. Notice I misspelled Scarlett Johansson, and it returned Matrix Resurrections imagery for the original Matrix. It infringes so hard, you don't even need to be accurate.

@givepeaceaplot1 @norabelrose Everything is a mash up. Can you imagine if Shakespeare's works were still under copyright. There'd be no Kiss Me Kate, or West Side Story.

I don’t really care what the current law on this is, but we should be working to destroy copyright as thoroughly as possible so I am on OpenAI’s side in this case.

🧵 The historic NYT v. @OpenAI lawsuit filed this morning, as broken down by me, an IP and AI lawyer, general counsel, and longtime tech person and enthusiast. Tl;dr - It's the best case yet alleging that generative AI is copyright infringement. Thread. 👇

11/29 Once a copyright expires, the work will become part of the public domain, and anyone can use it. Ever wonder why Shakespeare is so often used in plays and movies? Well, besides the brilliance of it, it’s in the public domain – free to use.

1/29 “Ha, ha, oh boy!” The copyright for a few Disney properties has expired as of Jan. 2024 including for Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and Tigger (from Pooh Corner). Disney had a cunning IP strategy to protect its brands over the years that’s worth a read 🧵:

@FromHappyRock @Marn_nom Not sure I understand the question. Performing a song or play is also covered, so being public domain can mean more performances. Shakespeare's work was probably never covered by copyright law, I don't know, but the fact it's free is great for the world.

Honest question- has anything rich and compelling ever actually come from an iconic old work or design entering the public domain? Is it not just all derivative slush?

@alterstil I think Shakespeare’s work is too old to have ever been protected by a modern definition of copyright, but I take your point

@JoyceCarolOates imagine if nobody could use a neologism but the original crafter lol thankfully these words first written down by Shakespeare aren't covered by copyright any longer.

for instance, I often use the word "ineluctably" assuming that some, not many perhaps but some, can identify the source of this particularly word. (i.e., a Joycean source.) I would not consider this plagiarism, it is definitely homage since a Joyce is allowed to reference a Joyce
Joyce Carol Oates@JoyceCarolOates

it isn't inevitably drivel but it is certainly read by very few people; & who knows whether the work that was plagiarized was entirely original to begin with. a sharp eye/ear can pick up nuances in poetry & can identify sources instantaneously; probably true in music too.

@Dnova89 @DiscussingFilm That's what the  © Copyright symbol after a fictional works name indicates. Works created centuries ago are already in that domain , meaning anyone can create using Shakespeare's characters or Beethoven's music. It allows mankind as a whole to eventually build on great works

OG versions of Batman & Superman become public domain in 2034 and 2035. However, DC has trademarked the terms “Man of Steel” and “Caped Crusader,” as well as Superman’s “S” and Batman’s logo.

Good. OpenAI is trying to hijack the term GPT. Maybe attempt to copyright the word “CHAT” next time 🤣
