For you to have a welfare state, you need to have a wealth endowment or high productivity. Either you are a nepo baby nation (Saudi, Norway) or a hustler nation (America, Singapore). The surplus for welfare must come from somewhere. You can’t have the lifestyle of a nepo baby or a hustler without an endowment or hustling. You will go bust. This is the pathway that the UK is threading. Welfare without an endowment or hustle.
We can argue about whether the National Socialists were socialists. But let’s shift the debate. Were the National Socialists statists? Did they - like the Communists - believe the state is the centre of all economic, social and political power and control?
