Give A Shit About Nature
Give A Shit About Nature@giveashitnature·
The tree in your yard is running a natural cooling system right now. On a hot summer day, a mature tree can pull around 100 gallons of water up from its roots and release it through its leaves as water vapor. As that water evaporates, it carries heat away from the leaves and cools the air around the canopy. That's only part of the story. The shade from the crown keeps sunlight from baking the ground below, while transpiration adds another layer of cooling. Together, they can make a yard with mature trees noticeably cooler than the pavement and treeless lawns nearby. Your tree has been moderating summer heat, reducing temperatures, and making your yard more livable every day since before you moved in. The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is before the heat waves come back next summer.

To secure our future, we must actively embrace sustainable farming systems. This means championing practices like contour plowing, mulching, rainwater harvesting, cover cropping, and drip irrigation. Water management stands as a pivotal pillar in climate action.

Walk outside and look at the base of your trees. If the mulch is piled up against the bark in a cone, pull it back. That volcano holds moisture against living tissue. Bark is a tree's skin, the barrier keeping disease and rot out of the living wood underneath. Pack mulch against it and you're keeping it chronically wet, which invites fungal disease and insect damage. Do it long enough and it kills the tree, slowly, from the base up. The fix takes 2 minutes. Rake the mulch back so there's a clear gap between the pile and the trunk, a flat donut instead of a cone. No mulch touching bark. Once you see it, you'll notice it on every street in your neighborhood.

If and when there's a terrorist attack in the next 2 months, it will be a false flag from Israel trying to pin it on either Iran directly or it's "terrorist" proxy groups. It's evil and it's their only play imo.

Food tastes better when it didn't travel 1,000 miles to get to your plate. 🚛❌ Choosing local farmers means fewer emissions from distribution, less fuel wasted, and the freshest, most nutrient-dense produce possible. #EatLocal #HealthyLifestyle #FarmToTable

The spent coneflower you're about to deadhead isn't actually done yet. Goldfinches are one of the only songbirds that feed their nestlings seeds instead of insects, which makes them almost entirely dependent on plants that hold their seed heads through fall and winter. A coneflower you leave standing feeds them from August straight through to January, one of the only things in most yards still producing food when everything else is bare. The same goes for black-eyed Susans, sunflowers, and native grasses. The "messy" dried stalks that most people cut back in fall are a working pantry. The hollow stems also shelter native bees through winter, so the cleanup you skip in October is the habitat you keep until spring.

Humans create empires for the same reason they create egos. It’s all about the impulse to control. We come into this world boundless and free with eyes full of wonder, but within a few years our minds create and solidify a sense of self around which our mental lives revolve. We do this because we are helpless when we are born, and things happen which are uncomfortable or startling, so we naturally begin seeking out strategies to control what happens to us. Before you know it we’ve got vast spires of psychological architecture within us dedicated to using thought to promote the interests and security of an entirely symbolic me-character that we made up in our minds. And from that point on we are cut off from the Eden of perception. Our attention rests no longer in the wonder of the senses but in the incessant babbling of the mind and its churning narratives about self and other, enemies and threats, attainment and lack, attachment and aversion, ambitions and deficiencies, unworthiness and shame. All because we were born helpless little creatures with nervous systems and a startle response in a world full of chaotic giants. And then we have the capacity for psychological suffering. Whereas previously we were only able to experience discomfort from actual material forces like hunger or a diaper rash, or from being startled by a big dog or something, suddenly we have created the ability to suffer for reasons we created entirely inside our own heads. Stories like “I’m inadequate,” “I failed,” “I embarrassed myself,” “I made a mistake,” “I hate that person,” or “That person isn’t doing what I want” consume our attention throughout the day and make us miserable. And it all arises from that initial impulse to control what happens in order to feel secure. All social dysfunction has its roots in that impulse. Abusive relationships happen when one partner tries to exert extreme control over the other for their own sense of security. Economic injustice happens when one class exploits the other because they think they’d feel a bit more secure if they just had another billion in the bank. Tyrannical governments happen when leaders feel the need to control the thoughts, words and behavior of the populace to secure their ongoing rule. Empires happen when tyrannical governments feel the need to control what goes on not just in their own nation, but in surrounding nations as well. That’s ultimately all that drives the US empire. People who have far too much interest in controlling other people, with far too much power to do so. It causes a horrifying amount of suffering, destruction, chaos and injustice, but at its root is that fundamental impulse to control what happens which emerges within all of us in early childhood. We’re basically ruled by emotional toddlers who never learned to rein in their egos. They’re trying to control the planet in the same way they tried to control their access to toys and candy when they were small. It is possible for the human organism to liberate itself from its habituated creation of the ego through the process commonly referred to as spiritual enlightenment. It is also possible for humanity as a species to liberate itself from its large-scale control mechanisms in the same way. That’s what a healthy humanity will look like. We will be free from all internal impulses to control, manipulate, exploit and dominate, and our systems for organizing society will no longer feature states which oppress their populations and try to rule the world. We are still very, very far from achieving this potential as a species. Humanity is still deeply ensnared in its egoic delusions, on an individual level and at mass scale. But we’re waking up. Strangely, awkwardly, stumbling forward like a toddler, we are moving to become a conscious species.

Relentless heat! The Heat Dome powering the #heatwave in #Florida, #Texas and across the #Gulf Coast will only grow in intensity over the next week! What you see, is what you get. Tropical humidity will spike Heat Index numbers in Florida to 105-110, Texas 110-120 today. With oppressive #heat persisting through late next week.

Glue trap sales need to drop to zero. They don't just catch mice, they catch whatever walks across them. Wildlife rehabbers document birds, lizards, snakes, and bats coming in stuck to glue traps every season, pulled out of garages and barns by people who had no idea. Whatever lands on one dies slowly, which is also true of the mouse you were trying to catch. A live trap with a dab of peanut butter costs about four dollars and catches the same mouse without the bycatch. Check it daily, drive the mouse at least a mile out, and release it. The UK banned glue traps for general sale in 2022. You can help by not buying them.

“Our problem is civil obedience. This isn’t a toy. It’s a cluster bomb. Israel is dropping cluster bombs shaped like small footballs across South Lebanon — designed to attract children before they tear them apart. This is a war crime. And yet, not a peep from the complicit international community, of course.
