@mtpennycook Would Labour look, at the same time, to bring all empty buildings back into affordable use? We could wipe out most housing waiting lists if this was done properly and basic human needs were decommodified. This would be a real leap forward.

A Labour government will: ✅End the Tory green belt free-for-all. ✅Release more low-quality green belt land and ensure development on it helps meet local affordable housing need. ✅Protect, enhance and open up high-quality green belt land.

Brownfield land first cannot mean brownfield land only. There is simply not enough of it to deliver the number of homes that the country needs each year. Time for a more honest and strategic approach to greenbelt release and the role it can play in tackling the housing crisis.

@sweetcorn56 What if we changed who builds the homes? UK is very behind on community-led housing which is huge in other parts of the world, creating resilient communities in beautiful spaces. We need to stop thinking that Barratt and co are the only ones out there.

@mtpennycook If green belt land is to be used, then builders must be responsible for road, sewage, schooling and local doctors upgrades. Too often they come in build the properties, take the money, overloading a local community, who already do not have sufficient structure to cope!!!!!!

@SmartGrowthUK ...and the potential for soil and ecosystem regeneration. Using permaculture and other methods, all degraded land can be returned to life.

If as my lasting legacy, i could have a mass information campaign about what the Greenbelt is and isnt that would do me. Talking to peers they think it is a law to protect beautiful countryside rather than what it is which was an underhand tactic to keep the North & Midlands down to ensure the primacy of London
