I realise why you might do it before a World Cup (Italy, this time, for some) but have we ever looked *back* at a World Cup and wished a non-qualifier was there to have enhanced the tournament? (Don't say England at USA '94, we know that's not true.)

Huge comunity in France to support the team; loaded team (original golden generation - Figo, Rui Costa, Paulo Sousa, João Pinto, etc...).
All hinged on a controversial Rui Costa Sent-off for taking to much time to be subbed while leading in Germany.

Phew, that's all for this international break - some historic results, 10 teams booking their places in the finals, and plenty of groups finely poised going into November's break. Qualifying has definitely been livened up by the new format!

And in Oceania, the All Whites of New Zealand 🇳🇿 won the qualifying tournament in March to win the OFC's first ever guaranteed World Cup spot, beating play-off-bound New Caledonia 🇳🇨 in the final

Stoppage time giveth, stoppage time taketh away: Suriname were on the verge of a enormous win over Panama until the hosts scored a late equaliser to keep the two teams level on points. Suriname lead on goals scored, but Guatemala are now only a point behind the pair
