@ViktorsValainis

@Wikipedia is systematically changing the birthplaces of Baltic nationals born between 1945 and 1991 to “Soviet Union.” I corrected my own birthplace to Estonia. Within two minutes, an editor changed it back to “Estonian SSR, Soviet Union” Let me be clear: I was born in Estonia — temporarily occupied by the Soviet Union. That is what I was told by my parents and what I have known all my life. If Wikipedia wishes to write “Soviet-occupied Estonia,” that would at least reflect historical reality. But reducing my birthplace to “Estonian SSR” erases the fact of occupation, Estonia's identity and the legal continuity of the Republic of Estonia. I have spent much of my life working to restore and safeguard Estonia’s independence. Having non-Baltic editors insist on rewriting my birthplace as “Estonian SSR” feels like a symbolic continuation of that occupation. People born in Nazi-occupied Denmark were still born in Denmark. People born today in Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine are still born in Ukraine. Does Wikipedia list “Reichskommissariat Ostland, Generalbezirk Estland” as the birthplace of people born in Estonia between 1941 and 1944? Estonian SSR was a construct created by the Russian occupiers never recognised by anyone and is used today as a meme of Russian imperialist hallucinations.
