🧵 3)  As part of my graduate school program I was also forced to take “Psychology of Prejudice” (massive puke, huge barf, major ew).  That class was so hideously unbearable I had to take regular breaks and call my brother, my dad, or my cousin from the hallway to vent and scream about what the professor was teaching. Every assignment was awful – I had to find creative ways to do what was asked of me but do it in a way that never compromised my beliefs or communicated that I agreed with anything he was teaching.  I routinely challenged him during lectures until he stopped calling on me.  The final assignment of the semester was to write about a time we experienced discrimination/prejudice…I wrote about his class.  The final sentences of my paper were, “I was of the impression that classrooms were for the unbiased examination and exploration of academic ideas.  However, I learned in this class that was not the case.  My beliefs and values were judged and negated by both my professor and fellow classmates.  Anytime I attempted to defend my views I was met with intolerance, prejudice, and stereotypical slurs. I left your class not with a feeling of enlightenment but one of anger and sadness at having my culture belittled and insulted.  I find the hypocrisy in this to be astonishingly ironic.  Now, only time and a final letter grade will truly tell if tolerance and respect for opposing opinions exists in a class designed to abolish prejudice and stereotypes.” I got an A in his stupid ass class 🥰

🚨 LONG ASS STORY THREAD TIME 🚨 When I was in college - DECADES ago in a small town university - I was one of a handful of outspoken conservative students - and my professors hated me. Three experiences I will never forget: 🧵 1) I was in some random required class that had absolutely nothing to do with my major OR with politics…and our professor (and overweight man hating feminist) canceled class on election day so we would all have the opportunity to vote if our day would not otherwise accommodate doing so.  In exchange for this “act of kindness” she asked that we write an essay about who we voted for, and why.  Naturally I was horrified, outraged, and had zero intention of complying…but knew I had to find a way to “complete” the assignment – so I wrote her an essay on why the right to cast a secret ballot in a public election is a core value in America’s system of self-governance.  I knew she would not appreciate my work, so I made sure that it was both factually and grammatically perfect…and she reluctantly gave me an A 😌
