During the 2009 assault, his younger brother was killed before his eyes while they were playing football outside. In the 2012 assault, his older brother was killed, followed by his father during the 2014 assault. Traumatized by these losses, Hamza became deeply attached to his mother, the last remaining member of his immediate family. “They became inseparable. He spent his days with his mother, slept beside his mother, and whenever he went out, it was always with her. She was the only person who could still make him smile,” his aunt said. “But last Friday, when the Israeli bombing resumed, Hamza began to panic. He felt that his mother was going to die. He cried endlessly. With every explosion, he screamed in terror. And the next day, his mother was killed.” This is the devastating psychological reality many children in Gaza are enduring after years of war, loss, and trauma.
