At Galunggung in Indonesia 🇮🇩 🌋 the @ROTTnROCK team were investigating the impressive recent collapse within the crater - we found plenty of altered rocks in the blocky deposit!

In our paper, we propose a 2-stage model involving fractionation of basaltic magma in the mid-crust followed by assimilation of altered crust at shallow levels.

The basaltic rocks at Katla have fairly mantle-like oxygen isotope ratios whereas the silicic rocks have noticeably low ratios, suggesting they interacted with Icelandic crust with a modified oxygen isotope signature (low d¹⁸O crust) 🧵2/3

Magnetite crystals at the El Laco deposit in Chile. At >5000 m elevation, El Laco is known for its spectacular lava flow-like deposits of magnetite (the crystals in the photo are ca. 1 cm across) 🌋
