@ScienceSAL, PhD student in Ocean and Earth Sciences, studying how field metabolic rate varies across species of fishes. Sarah also enjoys scuba diving on the South coast and is an active member of Edmund Kell Unitarian Church.

"A PhD really is a rollercoaster – full of ups and downs. I’ve come out of a down and I’m on an up. I often wonder how life would be if I’d accepted the shark PhD. Maybe it would be easier, or harder, or just different. Either way, I know now I’m so lucky to have my dream job."

@catarinacmoura, PhD graduate in Human Development, investigating the potential of non-linear imaging techniques to characterise skeletal stem cells as a new means to improve diagnostics in bone/cartilage repair and regeneration strategies.

"I started running for the first time in Southampton, when before, running was something completely unbearable for me. I've started challenging myself and running taught me we can do everything – we just need to believe in ourselves, fight and pursue our goals."

Joan Garcia Tormo, PhD student in applied mathematics and theoretical physics, studying the quantum structure of black holes in string theory. Joan uses his fingers to count and add small numbers.

"Bottom line: If you see a path that you enjoy and you can manage things to make it plausible, go for it! As long as you're having fun, the ride itself is reason enough to do it."

Florentin Bulot, PhD student in Computational Engineering & Design, studying low-cost sensors to measure air pollution.

"After graduating, I went on tour with Brass Band Without Borders for a year, we travelled to Nepal, Madagascar & Colombia for an amazing human & musical experience. Coming back to a more conventional life was not easy, but I still had in mind that I wanted to work in research."

@FzNoise, PhD student in the Novel Glass Group, studying how to develop chalcogenide optical fibres for multiple applications of the infrared spectrum.

"I have to admit that as a science fiction fan, Back to The Future inspired me to pursue a career in science, maybe it is pointless to mention it or even childish, but it is true, science is for making dreams come true."
