Singh resigned from the Cabinet of Rajiv Gandhi, triggering one of the biggest political crises for the Indian National Congress in independent India’s history. Singh had pushed for a probe into the Bofors scandal, involving alleged kickbacks in the defence deal. Instead of backing the investigation, the Rajiv Gandhi government forced him out. The message was simple. Question corruption and you are shown the door. His resignation shattered Rajiv Gandhi’s “Mr. Clean” image and turned Singh into the face of the anti-corruption movement. What followed was public outrage, protests, and a credibility crisis for Congress. In 1989, voters delivered their verdict. The scandal became a symbol of corruption at the highest levels of power and make corruption a synonym of Congress.
