I work with activist-researchers in/from Myanmar, India, etc, who've been doing this work longer than the majority of US folk & it baffles us to hear this narrative that there's no one doing work in the 'global south' Our work puts us at risk from state-level actors AND big tech

The Independent National Electoral Commission still hasn’t answered a basic question: how were its chair’s email & phone linked to an account they now deny? Public trust is non-negotiable. Nigerians deserve clear evidence—not vague statements. Strengthen accountability or step aside. Democracy depends on it.
INEC Nigeria@inecnigeria

INDEPENDENT NATIONAL ELECTORAL COMMISSION PRESS STATEMENT INEC CHAIRMAN HAS NO ACCOUNT ON X, DISREGARD PARTISAN FABRICATIONS The attention of the Office of the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has been drawn to a malicious and coordinated campaign of calumny circulating on social media. The false claim alleges that the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, has, in the past, endorsed a partisan post on the platform X (formerly Twitter). The Commission wishes to state categorically that this allegation is entirely baseless, a total fabrication, and a figment of the imagination of its purveyors. For the avoidance of doubt, the INEC Chairman does not own or operate any personal account on X. He has at no time engaged in partisan commentary, nor has he ever associated himself with any political leaning or activity in his private or public capacity. This contrived X post is a desperate attempt to impugn the integrity and neutrality of the Chairman at a critical period when the Commission is focused on significant electoral reforms and preparations for upcoming polls. It is a needless distraction designed to stir public distrust in the electoral umpire. Beyond this partisan mischief, the Commission is aware that cybercriminals have been on the prowl, utilising fake social media accounts in the Chairman’s name to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians. We wish to place it on record that several of such fraudulent accounts had been identified and reported to security agencies in the past. This latest fabrication is merely a continuation of a criminal pattern aimed at exploiting the Commission’s profile for illicit gains. The Commission will not fold its arms while the character of its leadership is being assassinated by digital imposters and mischief-makers. We wish to notify the public that we are working in close collaboration with relevant security agencies and cyber-intelligence units to track and identify the individuals or groups behind this identity theft and misinformation. Let it be clearly understood that the Commission will ensure that these imposters face the full wrath of the law. Identity theft and the dissemination of deepfake or forged social media interactions are criminal offenses under the Cybercrimes Act. Those responsible for this mischief will be tracked and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others who believe the digital space is a safe haven for criminality. The general public is hereby urged to disregard this falsehood in its entirety. We will continue to disseminate official information regarding the Commission and the Chairman’s activities only through our verified institutional channels and formal press statements. The Commission remains undeterred and fully committed to its mandate of delivering free, fair, and credible elections for all Nigerians. E-Signed: Adedayo Oketola Chief Press Secretary/Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman Abuja, Nigeria. 10th April, 2026

40 Things I Learnt At 40 (11-20) 11. To err is human but to forgive is… human too! Forgive, but don’t make an exception for a friend’s treachery, for it is motivated by envy. Forgiveness to a treacherous friend should never be accompanied by a restoration of personal access, else you’ll pay for it in heavier terms. 12. It doesn’t matter what people in your personal life say to you in your presence; what matters is what they say — especially what they do — about you in your absence. 13. And all is dust, remember this. The topmost human frailty is the propensity to think we will live infinitely. Our days in life are indeed finite; I’ve been shocked by the sheer number of people who detest hearing this. Spending your entire life avoiding this truth will not increase your years by an extra second! 14. Money will guarantee you comfort — not happiness. Neither is bad as an ambition; the tragedy is miscalculating the source of the latter. 15. When in trouble and needing help, don’t go compiling a list of people you have been good to in the past, thinking they might want to bail you out. ‘One good turn deserves another’ is, in practice, alien to most people. Most people have short memories; when the chips are down, only a few will remember your past kindness. I learnt this the hard way, by the way. 16. One of the greatest gifts to oneself is self-awareness. Possessing it means nobody can emasculate you by exaggerating your weaknesses; you know them already. It also means nobody can be obsequious to you by magnifying your strengths; you know them already too. 17. Every strength has a weakness component, and every weakness has a strength component. For that reason, the human search for perfection in interpersonal relationships is Utopian. 18. On Entrepreneurship The most useful resource you need to convert an idea into a physical business is not money (It isn’t even one of your top five needs!); it’s conviction. 19. On Career Choices “Salary is the bribe they pay you to build their dreams”? That’s a lie, one of the worst well-worn career lies in history! Actually, salary is the allowance they pay you to build your own dreams. If your current job is not equipping you with the skills to drive you towards your planned career trajectory in paid employment or subsequently building your own dreams, then that’s on you. You either accepted the wrong job offer or you spent your time there quiet-quitting. 20. On Romantic Love The ideal love is one where the first argument of the two people involved is who loves the other more. “I love you more than you love me.” “No, I’m the one who loves you more.” If you ever find that kind of love, better keep it! If you’re lucky, you’ll find only one of such in your lifetime. The luckiest of the luckiest humans will only find it twice. Some won’t find it even once.

The comments are very interesting, and I was wondering why until I remembered that he has blocked all possible critics on his account to successfully build himself an echo chamber. But good thing that many people can see through his BS & charlatanism.

@prem_thakker @USAID #FactCheck: Hey Prem! In my many years of studying Twitter, I’ve found that ‘This account does not exist’ usually shows up when an account handler disables the account, or changes @. It’s very unlikely that Twitter would down the @USAID account.
