Our in-depth account of Andy Burnham's path to power and an extraordinary 72 hours * Burnham had hoped to have until September to prepare for government. He now just has three and a half weeks to form a cabinet and come up with a policy platform * Starmer decided not to give him the luxury of a long coronation. “Keir’s point of view was they wanted him out and if he was doing such a terrible job why should he wait till September?” * Big speech on the economy next week as Burnham prepares to set out his plan for economic growth **within** Labour's fiscal rules * The Battle for the Chancellorship: Ed Miliband, Wes Streeting, Shabana Mahmood all in the running. Burnham determined not to appear 'factional'. * The fact Mahmood is still v much in the running - despite her clear preference to stay as home sec - is fascinating. There has been a concerted 'stop Ed' campaign behind the scenes * Burnham is genuinely undecided on his pick for Chancellor. It feels like a decision he has to make sooner than later * He is planning to take Lord O'Neill of Gatley, a former Goldman Sachs banker and Treasury minister, and Andy Haldane, a former chief economist at the Bank of England, into No 10 with him to bolster his economic credentials * Not clear when access talks will start. Dame Antonia Romeo, the cabinet secretary, wants to get them started as soon as possible. But there is a constitutional impediment - Burnham has not even been nominated yet. So they may have to wait until July 9, just over week before he is due to enter No 10. Which seems insane * Whither the defence investment plan? Starmer insists he is pressing ahead with it. Burnham wants the final say. His allies say it cannot be determined by a lame duck prime minister * Burnham's shock at emerging from Euston in a cab to be met with dozens of photographers. He had intended to take the tube. Aides talked him out of it. He's going to have to adapt to a level of scrutiny he has never experienced before * He plans to spend the next 48 hours talking to as many MPs as possible. He hasn't even met most of the 2024 intake. He has requisitioned the office of a whip in PCH for talks thetimes.com/uk/politics/ar…

I don’t think I’ve seen a Labour MP with as much aura as Andy Burnham. He was favourite to become PM whilst still a mayor, An MP voluntarily gave up their seat for him, he breezed through the local elections. No other MP is willing to challenge him. He’ll become PM with no contest. Insane.

I’m ashamed of the Labour party. You’re a bunch of morons. I shall be leaving the Labour party, A party I have supported my entire life. If you think Burnham will have an easy ride you’re an idiot. The rich bastards will eat him for breakfast.

How is this allowed? Right now Andy Burnham is just a candidate. Nominations haven't even closed, yet No. 10 is already giving him Government briefings and Cabinet Secretary meetings. Labour are treating him like he's already Prime Minister before the contest has even finished. What happened to a fair leadership election?

Did Andy’s team arrange most of the women in the front of the photo? If so, typical Labour! Women placed in the front for symbolism, but never able to get the top job. So many brilliant women in the PLP, but they had to ship a ‘bloke’ from Manchester to do the top job.
Lucy Powell MP@LucyMPowell

Great to welcome the newest member of the PLP, my friend Andy Burnham, to Parliament. He'll be a brilliant representative for the people of Makerfield, and I am sure he will quickly make his mark in this place!

I would love to see Darren Jones stand for the Labour leadership and win it. He is head and shoulders a better candidate that Burnham, in more ways than one.

@issywaite66 Keir Starmer did the exact job he was made for. As such Labour will be in his debt for that. However, as of now we need a different set of skills and a new person to deliver those elements.

I joined the Labour Party because of Keir, my local MP. I voted for him to be leader, and I don’t regret that. Keir gave our party the greatest gift, electability, and being able to be proudly Labour once more. I think history will remember him as a kind and dutiful PM.

It’s pathetic watching Team Burnham claim he needs more time to prepare for government. Andy Burnham openly signalled his desire to replace Keir Starmer back at Labour Conference in September 2025. Nine months later, if he still hasn’t worked out his programme for government then perhaps he’s not as ready for the job as his supporters claim.
