Graham Linehan and the Collapse of the “Women’s Rights” Claim Graham Linehan built his career as a celebrated comedy writer, responsible for shows like Father Ted, Black Books and The IT Crowd. In recent years, however, his public identity has shifted almost entirely away from comedy and toward political activism focused on opposing transgender rights. That shift has been accompanied by a long trail of controversies, legal disputes and public statements that directly undermine his claim to be acting in defence of women. Linehan’s activism began around 2018, when he started using social media to attack trans inclusion in law, healthcare and public life. He publicly praised anti-trans protesters at Pride events and framed transgender rights as a threat to women and lesbians. From the outset, critics pointed out that his rhetoric relied on fear and exaggeration rather than evidence. Over time, his language escalated. He compared gender-affirming healthcare to Nazi experimentation, a comparison widely condemned by medical professionals, Jewish organisations and human rights groups as grotesque and historically illiterate. He repeatedly dismissed established medical consensus, rejecting the positions of major health bodies while presenting himself as a lone truth-teller. In 2020, Linehan was permanently suspended from Twitter for repeated violations of its hateful conduct policies. He framed this as censorship, but the platform cited persistent harassment and abusive behaviour. Since then, his online presence has largely revolved around amplifying hostility toward trans people and those who support them. His behaviour has also crossed into legal territory. Linehan has been involved in multiple court cases linked to his activism. In one widely reported incident, he was convicted of criminal damage after knocking a phone out of a young trans activist’s hand during a confrontation at a public event. Although he was cleared of harassment in that case, the court described aspects of his conduct as unacceptable. He has also faced defamation proceedings over statements made about individuals online, with judges ruling that some of his publications were capable of being defamatory. In another incident, Linehan was arrested at Heathrow Airport following posts that police investigated for potentially inciting confrontation. While no charges were brought in that case, it added to a growing pattern of scrutiny over his conduct. Perhaps most revealing is how Linehan treats women themselves. Despite presenting as a defender of women’s rights, he has repeatedly amplified content that demeans women, sexualises female protesters, or portrays women who oppose state violence as hysterical or deviant. Most recently, he retweeted content calling for women to be stripped of the right to vote in the United States. That act alone exposes the contradiction at the heart of his claimed feminism. Linehan has also shared or endorsed posts mocking women who protest immigration enforcement, suggesting they are motivated by sexual fantasies rather than political conscience. These narratives do not protect women. They degrade them. The consequences of Linehan’s activism have been severe even by his own account. He has spoken publicly about losing work, friendships and his marriage. He presents himself as a victim of cancel culture, yet the record shows repeated choices to escalate rhetoric, target individuals and ignore the real-world harm caused by his words. None of this resembles a movement grounded in women’s liberation. Feminism has historically been about expanding rights, autonomy and dignity. What Linehan promotes is exclusion, punishment and control. It aligns far more closely with reactionary politics than with any genuine tradition of women’s rights. You cannot claim to defend women while amplifying misogyny, endorsing voter suppression or trivialising violence against women protesters. The record speaks for itself. Trash….
