Other than <sceptic> are there any other English words in which does not spell /s/ before <e> (scent), <i> (science) or <y> (scythe>?

@smorrisey Allomorphs are the variant phonetic realisations of a morpheme. (The words that can be constructed from your <tent> matrix alone contain several allomorphs of that root.) Spelling reflects some of that phonetic variation.

Allomorphs are different spellings or forms of a morpheme that share the same meaning and origin. I used the matrix for tent with my Ss the other day. Interestingly, Ss asked about words like tenacious and tendon. Matrices for ten, tend, and tent.

@RyonWLeyshon Yeah, I concur. I was considering reposting my morphology resources again (plus a few I’ve not posted before) but without a blue tick doubt the lack of engagement would make it worthwhile.

I am, once again, starting to question the value of sharing ideas/information/resources on this platform. Nowadays, the algorithm seems much harsher on accounts like mine so the engagement just isn't there to justify the time and effort required. Edutwitter isn't what it was. 😥

@RyonWLeyshon And the 'write several spellings and decide which one looks right' strategy is part of many teachers' spelling toolkit.

@RyonWLeyshon Thankfully, as you know, we don't have that in England, but several spelling programmes here have children correcting spelling errors and finding the correct spelling in a multiple choice situation.

This question pops up every now and again, so here's a very short thread... *Should we get children to correct misspelled words as part of spelling instruction?* The short answer is... No. Why not? And what does this tell us about our mental storage of words?

@SoundSyllable @ChrisCotF I’d have bought and recommended it around the planet if you’d written it, Jason!

@dnleslie @lifelonglit @ChrisCotF I haven't read it. I've only seen the few photos posted here where a pointed out some of the inaccuracies. I've no idea whether those are the only inaccuracies or there are others.

@lifelonglit @ChrisCotF Just checked my emails, and there was a lot of back and forth until Feb 2023 and then they said they were looking for someone to do the graphics / design side of it. I never heard from them again. 🤷‍♀️

@lifelonglit @ChrisCotF I went to their offices in London in November 2022 for an initial meeting, so it would have been a month or two before that when they got in touch. They wanted to create a book around the morphology resources I was posting at the time.

@lifelonglit @ChrisCotF The first and only time I've come across the book was in this thread. I found the whole experience a little odd.

@SoundSyllable @ChrisCotF I’d forgotten all about it TBH but then it started cropping up on some facebook morphology groups in posts with concern about accuracy and I was reminded of the strange events that led up to it.🤷🏻‍♀️

@lifelonglit @ChrisCotF I don't know. They get in touch in 2022 and asked if I wanted to write the book. Had a couple of meetings. Then I went quiet. I don't know anything about the author. I recall googling and she'd written quite a few primary Literacy books.

@lifelonglit @ChrisCotF Oh, I remember you tweeting that you’d been asked to write a book on morphology, I remember it because I’d been asked by DK to write this book too.

@SoundSyllable @ChrisCotF I was approached by this publisher to actually write this book but when I told them my terms they balked and went with a different author. You get what you pay for, I guess! 🤷🏻‍♀️

@smorrisey I'd be careful with statement like that. I think it's fine to say that <ion> is a sensible instructional decision (one that I'd make), more controversial to state that <tion> isn't a suffix.

When working with morphology matrices, it is a good idea to share non examples. A non example for bene meaning good is beneath (be- around on all sides; neath-below, down). Ss might see the word beneath and believe it has something to do with being good.
