@daveatherton She was kicked out because of her insistence that the Poll Tax was introduced. Another 4 votes in 1990 and history would be different.

@MichaelLCrick @MattChorley He only got the job because he wasn't Margaret Thatcher or Michael Heseltine. He wasn't selected for who he was but who he was not. He only won in 92 because Kinnock was a weak opponent. He had a growing economy between 92 and 97 but was hammered by New Labour under Blair.

John Major speaks so much sense in this Newsnight interview. He had huge difficulties in his six and a half years as PM, but almost thirty years on from leaving office he's become the wisest of our nine living prime ministers.
BBC Newsnight@BBCNewsnight

“The first role of any Government… is to leave something better for the next generation than your generation inherited - this is not done now” Ex-PM Sir John Major says young people are inheriting a “more difficult” and “less favourable world”. #Newsnight

History lesson for today: Parties ignore deep internal divisions at their peril. The EU question didn’t go away, it festered for decades until the referendum. Worth listening to Major’s full take - from 3pm onwards. bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0…

⏰ Saddened to hear John Major tell @MattChorley about 1990s when the seeds of Brexit were sown. The old guard, the wartime generation, were pro-European bc they never wanted to see another European war, retired around 1992. They were replaced by younger, far more Eurosceptic MPs. Suddenly the huge pro-Europe majority in the Conservative Party vanished.

Murphy absolutely fascinates me. Never known another person whose fully aware when the camera is on him. Every stride round the table and facial expression exaggerated for maximum effect. Proper full on narcissist with zero self awareness. Proper strange fella #snooker

Tommy Sheridan has come out and said he wants Alex Neil to be the next Celtic manager. His reasoning? “He knows the Championship very well” and “he’s a good Celtic man.” Now I’m going to be honest here that logic alone shouldn’t be anywhere near enough to land the Celtic job. Knowing the Championship and being a fan doesn’t equal being ready to manage a club of this size, with the expectations, pressure, and European demands that come with it. We’ve just come through a season where recruitment, structure, and decision-making have been heavily questioned, the next appointment has to be elite, modern, and forward-thinking not sentimental. This isn’t about who loves the club the most it’s about who can take it to the next level. Do you agree with Tommy or is this another “jobs for the bhoys” shout?

News🇬🇧🚨: "The prosecution involving the 3 Ukrainian rent boys, appearing at the Old Bailey today maintain that they have never met Keir Starmer and were paid to firebomb his front door and back doors by a Russia sounding chap they've never met called El Money". @georgegalloway. You couldn't make this shit up, but someone has. Not a SINGLE MSM outlet is reporting on this due to a closed court reporting measure from this pathetic series of wet wipes. Veteran broadcaster and Leader of the @WorkersPartyGB George Galloway gives a fascinating update in a curious case that seems to be the workings of a poorly written Hollywood script.

Did we ever get an explanation for this? One of the worst VAR errors of all time, directly impacted the result. Still hard to believe, really

A United Ireland has only existed while under British rule. Before we took control Ireland was made up of separate kingdoms, there was no unitary state. GOD SAVE THE KING.
Niall MacAthloach@CavanUlster

@StevenReith @paulmurphy68 @rcf14a @Nigelhg No it isn’t. And even if it was, the claim was always that the term was geographic, not political. So irrelevant on all fronts. Ireland was never British.
