Right now: - Nursing recruitment freezes - No jobs for new nurses - Nursing roles being downbanded - Losing 1 nurse every week to suicide Nursing needs strong, bold and uncompromising leadership. I'm standing for election to put #NursesToTheFront Post your ballot today!

After hearing from another lecturer in mental health nursing who resigned from their post, citing similar issues to those I experienced, I'd urge everyone in nursing to read this. It's not just me, and what I write about happens widely. #MHDeservesBetter onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/in…

Black people are nearly 4 times more likely to be sectioned than white people. Health Secretary Wes Streeting said this disproportionate targeting should “shame us all”. But the new Mental Health Bill has no radical changes that will address this systemic racism. 1/2

My message to medical students & junior doctors from disadvantaged backgrounds struggling with their mental health: I know stigma & discrimination are real & you feel like you are not supported & valued. But NEVER stop believing in yourself. Keep on fighting that good fight.

"I’m very pleased to see that the new Labour Government has introduced a mental health bill today to pave the way for reform to the Mental Health Act 1983. This is long overdue. Not yet fully capturing everything required, the bill, once amended, has real potential to help so very many people with the support they/we deserve. I am particularly keen to see young people getting the recognition they need in the path to these reforms and have their own needs better met, locally and nationally. ‘No wrong door’ should be a paramount principle. Services to those struggling with their mental health are still the poor relations to other areas in health. Our NHS systems may be indeed broken in general but, in relation to mental illness, there are particular intractable systemic problems. We should credit so many people and organisations who have campaigned long and hard to see this day come. Let’s keep working with and encouraging Government to get the reforms right and so help many to find life and light after such a long time waiting." - Ged Flynn, PAPYRUS Chief Executive gov.uk/government/new… #SuicidePrevention

For some strange reason the first reading of the new Mental Health Act bill yesterday didn’t get coverage. But it is a milestone- 6 years after our Review, interrupted by Covid and elections, paused to consider the Nottingham tragedy, we are finally here theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

🧵THREAD We are becoming increasingly concerned about proposed changes to the Work Capability Assessment. We understand that the government needs to make difficult decisions. But these changes would be unequivocally the wrong choice. Here's why 👇

1 in 7 adolescents live with a #MentalHealth condition. Without adequate support, these conditions can have long-lasting effects on their education, relationships, and overall well-being. We’re calling on countries to invest in effective age-appropriate mental health services for young people and to address barriers to care. bit.ly/4gX4GSS
