[📌] The "2 & 20" compensation model originated from Alfred W. Jones, who launched the first "hedge fund" in 1949. However, the broader alts industry adopted the fee structure as a standard in the 1960s. Greylock, Sutter Hill Ventures, Mayfield, + Venrock led early adoption.

[📌] The Small Business Investment Act passed in 1958 marking the beginning of government support for the private sector. Now, the US Small Business Administration (SBA) could license Small Business Investment Companies (SBICs) which allowed access to federal funds & tax breaks.

[📌] Fairchild Semiconductor was founded by 8 engineers (Traitorous Eight) who left Shockley Semiconductor in 1957. The company created the modern day VC blueprint for high growth tech-spinouts, employee stock options, & normalized serial founders.

[📌] In 1957, ARD invested $70,000 in a small, early-stage company called Digital Equipment Corporation {DEC}. The deal was led by Georges Doriot {Father of Venture Capital} who at the time was unaware that the investment would later prove out the institutional VC model.

[📌] J. H. Whitney & Co is another notable VC firm from 1946. Based in CT, the firm started out with $5M & a vision to back entrepreneurs with business ideas post-WWII who were turned away from banks. *The firm's strategy expanded to PE in 1989 as leveraged-buyouts surfaced.

[📌] The first modern VC fund was created in 1946. Based in MA, the American Research and Development Corporation (ARDC) operated until 1971. This was the first firm that was not part of a family office. Founded by 4 GPs, they invested in both VC + PE deals.
