If you are hungry you sell the 1000 cell phone. Yes people fall on hard times and that is why there are programs to help as a safety net. Those programs are not meant to be a way of life. Our economy is the best in the world. If you are unable to prosper in America you will not do better anywhere else. Affordability depends on which State you live in. Lowering taxes would help.
