In my latest @theelephantinfo Gold and Grief, I explore how women in Kakamega’s artisanal gold mines are exploited by gender norms and unequal systems. The industry is sustained by their labor, yet their voices and rights are routinely sidelined.ReadMore;theelephant.info/analysis/2026/…

Again, we ask: why is it that when Kenyans raise concerns, the very institutions meant to respond become condescending? We are one year to an election, a moment that requires the highest level of public confidence and cooperation. A Commissioner cannot be on TV dismissing questions by a public they are meant to serve as "a statement being blown out of proportion.” What happens on election day should questions about irregularities come up? IEBC is already operating under low public trust. In such a context, even a full stop or misplaced comma can trigger public concern. Perception is as important as process. Whether people can read or understand English is neither here nor there. Communication from an institution like IEBC must be clear, precise and incapable of multiple interpretations. Ambiguity (and silence) creates doubt.

Ann Nderitu, IEBC Commissioner: Our statement requiring old voters pre-2012 to register afresh is written in English, but Kenyans have misinterpreted it. #NTVWeekendEdition @MichelleNgele_

@KeruboSk When I stopped wearing it, it felt so uneasy. Now I see my reflection in the mirror, and it's beautiful, and I can't imagine having to wear make-up.

Are there women who leave the house completely barefaced? With no makeup at all. Just embracing their natural look. Curious...What’s that like for you?

We often wonder how people could look away from the atrocities committed by Leopold II, Hitler, or the devastation of nuclear bombs.. until we realize we’re living through our own moment of silence...

Read more books. Read to escape reality. Read to understand reality. Read to challenge what you believe. Read to think better. Read to write better. Read to argue better. Read to know yourself. Read to build something. A single book can completely rewire your brain.
