Based on possible future legal action by the Belgian Fed if Balogun plays (which would be overseen by a neutral court, not FIFA), I would recommend Poch not play Balo tonight. We can win without him. FIFAs lack of transparency makes me nervous about how this all REALLY went down.

This has nothing to do with the players. To play in a World Cup is the pinnacle of a players career. He may never have another World Cup game in his life. However you feel about a decision to reverse it, that he had nothing to do with, he’s been given an opportunity to play in another game. Everyone knows it was unjust, and the team moved on. After a bunch lawyers did lawyer stuff, he’s back. If you think any player would refuse to play because a referee made a bad call, you’re out of your mind.

If I were in your boots, I’d refuse to play against Belgium. Not because I think you’re a bad player or because you asked for any of this, i think you are great, but because politics has now entered the game.
A President of the United States publicly intervened, FIFA softened your suspension, and UEFA says FIFA crossed a red line. If you step onto that pitch, fair or unfair, millions of people will forever question whether you should have been there.
Don’t forget that your career is in Europe, the home of the world’s biggest clubs, the highest level of football, and fans who treat this sport almost like a religion. They care deeply about the integrity of the game. If it were me, I wouldn’t risk carrying this controversy for the rest of your career over a single match. One act of principle today could earn more respect than a hundred goals tomorrow.
Be a hero, don’t get branded as a corrupt loser, fans all over the world will remember your choice. Forever. One game can change all your career and life, choose wisely.

That’s exactly the precedent that has been set now. That‘s why this should have never happened, regardless of whether you think it was a red card for Balogun or not.

Interesting you picked a country who isn’t even competing. And no, I wouldn’t complain if one of their players was wrongfully ejected from a game and a bad decision was righted. I hope they overturn Olise’s card for France as well and give it to the Paraguayan player who pretended to be “touched” in the face. That’s what we want in sports. Correct decisions, not shitty officiating that can change the outcomes of games. Arguing that we should all be happy with poor decisions in sports……because that’s how it’s always been is a sad point of view.

To be clear: Whether it is or isn’t a red to Balogun is now irrelevant. Government interference is a violation of FIFA Article 2 & 15, and the punishment is disqualification and suspension. Nepal was suspended.
This is an admission of the violation.

Imagine how insecure the old Belgium team must be going into a game against the US with the world trying to make it a more even match by excluding one of our strongest players. Exactly! The argument is, we’ve been screwed before, so everyone needs to be screwed for all time. No, how about accountability with forensic use of VAR and poor officiating. Maybe the world can turn the page on accepting injustices. Change is always hard, but in the end this is better for the game. Arguing a poor decision should stand for all time is an astonishing point of view.

Of course, much of this debate about Trump is overlooking or handwaving away the fact that Balogun really didn’t deserve a red card for unintentionally stepping on Muharemović’s ankle.
If you’re reaching the correct outcome under the rules, can it still be called a corrupt process? Do the folks upset about Balogun’s reinstatement realize they’re arguing that an exceptionally bad call by the ref must be kept in place, to protect the so-called integrity of the game?

@piersmorgan Piers, the game is changing. If the technology designed to get calls right, results in getting calls wrong, the answer is not, “oh well, it has to stay wrong because that’s how it always has been.” The correct response is to correct the abysmal decision.

It should be overturned and given to the Paraguayan player for embellishment. The “dark arts” BS needs to die, and this is the way. I mean we had two players this tournament who are so used to “racially abusing” others by covering their mouths that they could prevent themselves from doing it to avoid suspension. Good riddance!
