It's always worth highlighting the conservative bona fides of our state director. We'll happily repost and pin to the top of our timeline for a day anyone who can take the @iSideWith quiz and get a socialism score lower than @JustinWStapley.

Mendes: The "Zombie" Campaign For the Establishment/Center-Right favorite, these numbers are catastrophic. The base views him as too "old guard" or too similar to the Socialists (the "bloco central" style). He has almost zero crossover appeal (single digits in IL, Chega, PS, and Independents). If these numbers hold, Mendes faces a humiliation. He risks finishing 4th, behind Cotrim, Seguro, and potentially Ventura. Pressure will mount for him to drop out to consolidate the Right behind Cotrim.

Seugro Seguro's only path is to terrify the Left Bloc/PCP voters into consolidating behind him, but Cotrim's high support among Independents makes that difficult to overcome. This suggests his social liberalism (or simply the desire for competence) is peeling off moderate leftists. He will likely make the Runoff (Round 2) purely on the size of the PS machine, but he enters as an underdog. He has failed to unite the Left, and the Center has abandoned him for Cotrim. This indicates deep internal divisions (possibly the "Pedro Nuno Santos wing" staying home or defecting). While he wins the "Green Left" (39.5% of Livre) and has decent backup from the Left Bloc (25%), he is failing to retain the centrist PS voter. He is losing voters to Contrim who is polling at 16% among Scolaists.

Vota Cross-Tabs Update – Presidenciais 2026 The traditional Center-Right (PSD/AD) has collapsed away from its own candidate (Mendes) and straight into the arms of the Liberal candidate (Cotrim Figueiredo). The race is now Cotrim's to lose. His broad appeal creates a real buffer against a unified Left in Round 2. Thread 🧵 #Presidenciais2026 #EleiçõesPortugal

Ventura Ventura remains a strong force, but his growth has stalled. His voters are loyal but he is losing 20% of his voters to Cotrim . This suggests that nearly 1 in 5 Chega voters are willing to vote for a Liberal victory over a Socialist one, rather than sticking with a protest vote. He will likely finish 3rd. He cannot break out of his silo because Independents broke heavily for Cotrim.

The latest Católica University poll reinforces what the tracking has been showing: The race is concentrating at the top. Ventura (24) and Seguro (23) lead, with Cotrim (19) the closest challenger. Mendes and Gouveia e Melo are tied at 14. Today's Vota data points to the coalition math: AD + IL voters are consolidating behind Cotrim, PS voters stick with Seguro, Chega voters stick with Ventura—independents lean Cotrim, but remain split.
