What about bird strikes? Tommy Thomson Park and the Toronto Islands themselves are major nesting grounds for migrating birds—particularly large birds like Canada geese, cormorants, gulls, and ducks. Billy Bishop Airport Has far more bird strikes than Pearson. In fact in May 2015 alone—on 7 different occasions—planes were struck by birds. That’s more than were struck at Pearson in 11 years! Bird strikes are not a problem for turboprops, but they are for high-bypass turbofan jets, the type being considered for Billy Bishop. Small birds, like the songbirds you find on approaches to Pearson, are manageable. Not large birds like the ones by the lake. Jets at Billy Bishop Airport are a human catastrophe waiting to happen.
