The election campaign in Hungary is entering a tense phase. The parliamentary elections on April 12, 2026, have already become the most challenging for Viktor Orbán in many years. The elections in Hungary will have far-reaching consequences not only for the country itself but also for the European Union. And also for Russia - because if Viktor Orbán loses, Russia will lose Hungary, just as it previously lost Moldova and Romania. Essentially, Russia would lose its influence in Central and Eastern Europe. That is why these elections are so important for Putin. And that is why we are seeing unprecedented interference from the Kremlin, Russian political technologists, and Russian propaganda in these elections, as well as unprecedented anti-Ukrainian rhetoric. Currently, the Hungarian authorities are spreading anti-Ukrainian sentiment and increasingly stoking aggression during the election campaign. But this harms not only the Ukrainian people but also the Hungarian people, because this rhetoric is directed straight from Moscow. It is Russia that is responsible for prolonging the war and creating energy crises. It is Russia that poses a danger to Europe, of which Hungary is a part. It is Russia that systematically uses energy as a weapon against Europe and as an instrument of geopolitical influence. It is also Russia that refuses to end the war and is responsible for attacks on energy infrastructure that affect European countries. Ukraine is not a source of threat. Russia is the threat. Russia is not a source of stability. Russia brings war to Europe. The EU’s main task today is to build European resilience and a common response to international threats, which requires unity above all. Without unity, there can be no sovereignty or protection of one’s own interests.
