Orbán nutzt das Veto-Recht nicht aus Willkür oder persönlicher Putin-Liebe, sondern als Hebel, um ungarische nationale Interessen durchzusetzen: Energieversorgung (Ungarn ist stark abhängig von russischem Öl über die Druzhba-Pipeline, die Russland selbst beschädigt hat, aber die Reparatur in der Ukraine liegt), Schutz der ungarischen Minderheit in der Transkarpatia, Ablehnung einer schnellen EU-Erweiterung um ein kriegszerstörtes, hochkorruptes Land mit massiven Agrar- und Rechtsstaatsproblemen, und gleichzeitig Druck auf Brüssel wegen der zurückgehaltenen EU-Gelder für Ungarn selbst. Jedes Land, das seine Souveränität ernst nimmt, würde bei existentiellen Themen wie Energie und Grenzfragen nicht einfach mit der Mehrheit mitlaufen – genau dafür gibt es das Einstimmigkeitsprinzip in der EU.
