Other than people coming because they want to go to clubs and party like never before in December, are there any state events put together for Detty December that showcase our culture?

Thank you Ademola, This perfectly aligns with the Lagos State Government's proposed Yoruba Week, which will come up before the end of the year. Gele, being a Yoruba traditional headtie that is now popular within West African countries and around the world, should definitely be a big part of the event. This is to showcase our rich culture, elegance, and the “Eko For Show” spirit. #SeeLagosSeeCulture Cc @Mz_Tosyn & @Yorubaness , your initial posts on the subject is noted. @Riddwane

Dear Mr. Governor @jidesanwoolu, Cc @Riddwane @IdrisConnecting @gbenga_omo I write to respectfully present a strategic cultural and economic proposal for the consideration of the Lagos State Government: the institutionalization of a Lagos Gele Festival as part of the State’s flagship Detty December calendar. Lagos has, in recent years, firmly established itself as Africa’s premier destination for end-of-year tourism, culture, and entertainment. Building on this momentum, a curated Gele Festival would serve as a distinctive cultural anchor, one that celebrates Yoruba heritage while advancing the State’s creative economy objectives. The Gele, as a cultural artifact, transcends aesthetics; it represents identity, craftsmanship, and intergenerational expression. Formalizing a festival around it would provide a structured platform to: - Showcase indigenous craftsmanship and contemporary innovation in fashion - Promote local enterprises across textiles, styling, and accessories - Drive cultural tourism through a uniquely Lagos-centric experience - Create employment and commercial opportunities within the creative value chain Positioned within Detty December, the festival would benefit from existing international visibility, diaspora engagement, and private-sector participation, thereby maximizing both cultural impact and revenue generation. Furthermore, given the shared cultural heritage across the Southwest, there is merit in adopting a collaborative, inter-state framework. Strategic alignment with neighboring states could elevate the initiative into a regional cultural asset. Engagement may be extended to all the SW states. Such coordination would reinforce cultural cohesion while positioning the Southwest as a unified destination for heritage tourism during the festive season. This proposal aligns with broader objectives around cultural preservation, tourism expansion, and economic diversification. With the right institutional backing and public-private collaboration, the Lagos Gele Festival has the potential to become a signature global event. I would be honored to see this concept considered and, if required, further developed in alignment with the State’s cultural and tourism strategy. Please accept the assurances of my highest consideration. Yours faithfully, Ademola

From my inbox. So about the ozoro issue, I was so annoyed and had to call one of my senior friend who is an isoko man but isn't from ozoro. I narrated the whole issue and he said he has never heard of such act. Note, this man is over 50. He ended the call, and called his friend who is from ozoro and resides there. He called back few minutes later and narrated the whole thing. He said in those days, there is a quarter in ozoro that during the festival, they will openly shame and drag married women who are yet to get conceive and mind you, they don't try to rape dem or even naked them. The shaming is a way of stiring up their emotions to make the whole childlessness issue pain them so they can cry to their deity in pain and with time, they will conceive and give birth to their own children. He said they don't do it to young girls neither do they do it to strangers. It's just to married women who are yet to give birth but indigenous to the community. It was a form of ritual practice but these boys taking drugs and other harmful substance chose to use the opportunity to spread across the community, harassing women and young girls. According to him, their king even sent some people to try and contain the whole issue but it was the bad news that made it to the Internet. If only the security agencies acted fast, it wouldn't have happened. Even my friends from ozoro and neighbouring villages have never heard of something like this before till just now.

The fact that there are no MEN out there defending the WOMEN and GIRLS being rap€d openly on the streets says a lot about that community.
