A wonderful little Bulbophyllum species from the Saccoglossum complex of section Codonosiphon, of which there are currently six accepted species. Morphologically, the column (which lacks appendages) and the shape of the clinandrium and stelidia of this flower match those of Bulbophyllum takeuchii (Howcroft) J.J.Verm., Schuit. & de Vogel most closely. This would make it a colour variant (not uncommon in the genus) as well as a new locality record — Eastern Highlands Province, Papua New Guinea (1,600–1,900 m). Previously, B. takeuchii had only been recorded from the island of New Ireland in East New Britain Province. It is therefore either a colour variant or an undescribed species; either way, it would benefit from further study. This small epiphytic plant grows with a patent habit and has distinct lengths of wiry rhizome between the pseudobulbs. Single-flowered inflorescences emerge from bracts at the base of the pseudobulbs along the entire length of the rhizome, usually directly beneath the leaves, making them somewhat inconspicuous at times. The flower differs from those of the other two species in the complex that I grow in that the flowers do not close daily in mid-morning once they open, yet they still last the usual 4–5 days. @orchidsofkurt Thank you! Yes, the lip is shorter than the column. The size of the tepals is also about the same as described. The description of the flower color doesn’t quite match the description of the type specimen, but it closely resembles the illustration.

1/ ​This is a ​n​ice little ​Dendrobium species from section Biloba (formerly sect. Monanthos) blooming in the garden. While individual flowers aren’t particularly striking on their own, a well-flowered plant is truly wonderful! It is a small​ epiphyte that is ​f​ound growing in the montane forests of the surrounding highlands (1,600–1,900m). Section Biloba, which includes about 36 species in New Guinea, is highly uniform. ​Interesting characteristics of species in the section include densely packed, thin stems that are often laterally flattened, thick roots, and ​b​i-lobed leaves.
