We are going to ship our first mass affordable product this year. Tentative price: $199. Who can guess what it is?

You'll want to be sitting down for this bit. Water companies are currently £82.7 billion in debt, have paid themselves £85 billion in dividends, leak over a trillion of litres of water per year, dump sewage for almost 4 million hours per year, have been convicted of over 1,200 criminal acts since 1989 and an average of 35% of your bill goes on nothing but paying more interest and yet more dividends. And not a single company has ever lost their operating licence. 👇
Prem Sikka@premnsikka

Yorkshire Water and Northumbrian Water have nearly 200 criminal convictions between them. On 6 August 2024, Ofwat fined them £47m and £17m for sewage dumping. Fines not paid, will not be paid. Firms claim to have invested. No penalty for abusing laws leftfootforward.org/2026/01/public…

For the people who don't know, I own/run a microbrewery and today whilst I program, I am brewing an Extra Special Bitter at 5.5%. Brewing is mostly a waiting game, so I have time to do my main job whilst I wait for it. I'll update this thread as the brew day continues.

No replies allowed to this nonsense Gas sets the WHOLESALE price of electricity which is only 40% of electricity bills Most of the costs of renewables bypass the wholesale market and are applied directly to bills. £billions of them THAT'S what you should be angry about. You're paying all of these extra costs which make our domestic bills the 4th highest in the world. Lots of countries import gas and use gas for power generation. And our gas prices are only 15th highest. So the argument that our electricity is expensive because of gas simply isn't supported by the data
Shebang@goshebang

@Dumnorix24 @marklongrigg @renewablesmiffy @moremagnanimous It’s how it’s always been. Since before renewables. It’s a broken outdated system. Renewables bid at much lower than the gas price but then the gas top up comes in at the highest price and that is then the set rate for all energy. It’s ridiculously stupid. Be angry at that.

V2 has been up and running for a few years already, is performing better and is easier to maintain because of all that we learned in building v1, and the mistakes we made along the way.

We recently took down the v1 of our SaaS api, and deleted the code that powered it - 2.3M lines. It had more of an emotional impact than I expected, so I took some time to blog about it. aluma.io/resources/blog…

This is great, a fix to the Go compiler that in-turn further speeds up the compilation of the recently ported TypeScript compiler 😄 #issuecomment-2719445786" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">github.com/golang/go/issu…

Never has this been truer. Labour needs to step up, wake up, show up, and get us back on the path to EU membership, in whatever form can be agreed. Blair was right then and is right now. Come on, sort yourselves out. Your economic growth doesn’t exist.

@dhh "Linux is wonderful, is flawed, is messy, is beautiful, is nerdy, is different. Android is customizable, is open, is fragmented, is less polished, is experimental. All the pros and the cons are true at the same time." Love this. Sums up how I feel about linux+android. 💯

Take it in. The first female chancellor. The first housing secretary who's actually lived in social housing. The first education secretary who was on free school meals. An energy secretary who actually believes in aggressively fighting climate change. Not a bad afternoon.

Children of the 80s! I'm starting on a long-term game that's based on a Knight Rider and Airwolf crossover. I'm calling it Knight-Hawke and I've quickly thrown together titles to see if Knight-Hawke should be hyphenated or not. What do you think? #GameDev #KnightRider

alloca caught us out. Stack overflow in a library we were using in certain, weird circumstances. Debugging was a nightmare; I had no idea alloca could cause a stack overflow as I'd never heard of it until then. Lost a couple of days to it!
Falco Girgis@falco_girgis

Hot take of the day... alloca() is underrated. It's an incredibly powerful, versatile, high-performance solution to automatic lifetime management of arbitrarily sized buffers, especially given C++ doesn't support VLAs. I use it HEAVILY on every platform I target. #cpp #cplusplus

@simonw It's not like escaping / backslashifying hasn't been solved multiple times elsewhere, but I guess llms are less predictable. As in, maybe they would treat an escaped prompt as an actual prompt.

Has anyone seen published guidance about how to avoid tokens (including special things like [INST] or <|eot_id|>) messing things up, for any of the available models? I've not seen good documentation on this myself yet
Wolfram Ravenwolf@WolframRvnwlf

@JagersbergKnut The prompt format concerns me - it's Vicuna 1.1-like, with just "User:" and "Assistant:" prefixes, apparently without special tokens? I expect there will be problems if the RAG or user message contains such strings. I'm asking them about it here: huggingface.co/nvidia/ChatQA-…

@Dave_DotNet @KarenPayneMVP That's doing I/O under the bonnet, so somewhere it's async, surely? Might as well make it obvious if so (and use the async API)... and if it's doing I/O synchronously, the thread is locked

Question When interacting with databases, do you write asynchronous or synchronous methods or both? And yes stored procedures were not used here.
