A 71-year-old cyclist, William Hoesch, sued Columbia River Fire & Rescue in Oregon after an ambulance struck his bike, transported him to the hospital, and then sent him an $1,862 bill for the ride. He is seeking nearly $1 million in damages for his injuries and medical expenses.
This case illustrates the often automated and impersonal nature of emergency medical billing. When an ambulance is involved in an accident, the billing department usually generates an invoice without initially accounting for fault. Victims facing this type of situation typically must have their attorneys or insurance providers intervene to resolve liability and get the charges dismissed.
