Shane and Ilya have been retired for a few yrs now and Ilya’s highlight of the day is doing the school drop off and pickup with their daughter. He loves standing in the playground and waving her off telling her to have a good day each morning. One day after pickup they are driving home and his daughter from the back seat says “Papa, is it okay if daddy takes me to school and picks up me tomorrow?”. Ilya confused asks “Why sweetheart? Papa always takes you to school it is my favourite thing”. She doesn’t answer him and they drive home in silence. Ilya tells Shane about it and he agrees to take her tomorrow and also tells him he’ll see if their daughter will tell Shane anything. The next day Shane does drop off and waves her off and at pickup she doesn’t seem herself. When in the car Shane turns round to face her in the backseat “What’s wrong my love? You haven’t said a word since you got out of school”. Her bottom lip begins to quiver and tears pool in her eyes “Papa didn’t tell me to have a good day”. Shane’s brow furrows “but baby you didn’t want papa to drop you off today so he couldn’t. Why did you not want him to drop you off?” She avoids his eyes, “because the boys always make fun of papas voice and says he sounds funny. I didn’t want him to be embarrassed”. Shane reaches out and rests his hand over here squeezing tight, she continues “Papa always says he gets his voice from baba Irina and he is very proud of that… I didn’t want him to hear the bad things the boys say about him”. Shane comforts her “baby you don’t have to worry about papa, he was more upset he didn’t get to tell you to have a good day. I think he missed you more than you missed him”. Shane pulls into their driveway and opens the car door for her to jump out, they walk to the front door and Shane flings it open as he does the silence is pierced by their daughter “PAPA!”. She shoots past Shane running into the house hunting for Ilya who appears from the laundry room “yes? My sweetheart”. She runs towards Ilya and he kneels arms spread to catch her as she jumps into his arms, he stands and spins with their daughter cradled in his arms. “I love you papa. I’m sorry, will you please take me to school tomorrow and everyday I missed you so much I didn’t have a good day because you didn’t tell me today”. He places a kiss to her forehead “of course I will baby I will take you everyday I would not miss it for the world. I also didn’t have a good day because I didn’t get to tell you” she buries her face in his neck as Shane comes to curl into Ilya’s side, Ilya pulls Shane closer and places a kiss to the top of his head. He whispers to himself “my world”.
