As my youngest son’s sophomore season ended, one of the big-name travel ball orgs dropped their new rankings I logged in to check his profile In his class they had him as the 8th-best catcher in the country No. 2 in Florida Not gonna lie I was a proud dad The following summer, we chose a different route No chasing invite-only events, no living on planes He spent the summer training Getting stronger Cleaning up his swing Catching better arms He played in just three tournaments, none of them affiliated with that ranking organization He played the best baseball of his life and earned a scholarship to a top‑25 D1 program That fall, out of curiosity, I checked his profile again Ranked No. 221 Did he really get that much worse? If he did, I never saw it Maybe 213 guys just “got better” Or maybe the formula changed He went on to have a great college career Conference and regional champ MVP of the Gainesville Regional His team came a couple of plays short of Omaha Then he got a couple of years in pro ball for good measure The ranking never predicted any of that The game still rewards work, toughness, and development more than any list ever will Rankings are a great marketing tool Not a great predictor of future success

Team culture is attractive, not because of the core values it chooses, but because of the value it offers a person. Everyone is attracted to a certain kind of culture, depending on what they value and what affects their reality. A person who loves to compete is attracted to a culture of high standards, responsibility, meritocracy, and winning. A mediocre or losing culture may not seem attractive but people gravitate to culture like that and stay in it, even defend it, because that culture protects them. It protects their patterns, their power, and their comfort. Their way of life, their paycheck, and their future. They don’t care if it’s a winning culture or what it produces. Those are secondary goals, if at all. They care that the culture doesn’t change in ways that remove their protection. You can’t create a culture that everyone values. But you can create a culture valued by the kind of people you want to attract, and not valued by the kind of people you don’t want on your team.

The older I get, the more I realize it’s perfectly ok to tell nobody what’s coming for you. Disappear for a few years and come back crushing it. Don’t say a word to anyone about plans or progress. Grow in silence. Work without validation. Normalize the silent rise. It’s special.

The people I know who love their lives all figured out the same thing at some point: Money is a tool for buying back your time, not a number to maximize at all costs.

The only way you can find out how good you are is by giving yourself a chance. Most of us excuse, rationalize, or give up before we've even given ourselves a shot. Put yourself in position to do something. Don't obsess over whether it'll work out or not. Give yourself a shot.
