LIES, DAMN LIES AND STATISTICS -USE OF DISHONEST STATISTICS BY RTE TO DIMINISH THE SERIOUSNESS OF THE HOUSING CRISIS * One of the most important lessons you learn when learning about statistics, is that you can use/ misuse statistics to prove pretty much anything you like if you are dishonest and have an uninformed audience. There are two main reasons why this "analysis" is misleading and dishonest to the affordability of Dublin's rents compared to our European peers. Firstly, Gross means before tax, and Ireland has the 2nd most punishing tax regime on full time workers in the EU, after Belgium. Secondly, anyone who has completed Statistics 101 knows that median rather than average gives a better understanding of what an randomly chosen person earns when dealing with a non-normally distributed variable, eg. Wages/ salaries. Wages are: Positively skewed (right-skewed) Many people clustered around low–middle incomes A long tail of high earners Therefore, Mean > median in any analysis, as a small minority earns disproportionately high income which distorts the results (long right tail in statistical parlance). This is doubly so in Ireland where average salaries are particularly distorted by the presence of a relatively small number of multinational jobs, who are paid far more than the median income. Q.E.D., the mean gross income used by Eurostats, does not give us a useful indicator of how affordable/ unaffordable Irish rents are to a randomly chosen renter, compared to his European counterpart. Mean Net income compared to rent should be used to compare instead for an accurate comparison, just as the CSO does for their "normal worker" statistic with a median wage of around 45 thousand.
