Dear 25-year-old who just started learning SQL, You will feel behind. The CS grads will throw around terms you've never heard. Someone will ask if you've used dbt and you'll nod like you know what it means. You'll wonder if you started too late. You didn't. The best data engineer on my last team was a former accountant who learned Python at 31. The second best was a biology PhD who pivoted at 28. Zero CS degrees between them What they had was the ability to look at a messy dataset and ask the question the business actually needed answered. The industry doesn't need another engineer who can recite CAP theorem. It needs people who understand why data matters in the first place. If you came from somewhere else, that's not a weakness. It's the thing that'll make you useful faster than any cert. Keep going. Month four is the worst. Month seven is where it clicks.
