@mattwridley Only 7 years late Matt. Only 7 years late. Maybe you can write a book about the number of times your editors repeatedly refused to publish your exposés.

@clashreport Hard to think of another country where "following orders" is a fundamental national characteristic. Maybe the UK? They formed the world longest queue a couple of years ago when their deity died. It literally smashed records. Yes Sir, No Sir, Please Sir.

This seems hardly mentioned at all, but In the UK the restrictions on smartphones is especially repressive in terms of capitalist opportunities for young people. The influencer phenomenon was an innovation by young people not the 40+ demographic. It will just straight-up murder innovation by young kids if they have all these invented barriers to tech.

3/ Also there is a distinction between the STIFLING systematic interventionism (à la European Union) where the state overregulates your dishwasher & select interventionism where the state gets in 2 standard deviations away (in effect). #TheLydianStone

2/Political systems should never be dissociated from the scale at which they apply. So China is vastly more non-communist than France for most citizens, reversing for large companies. In Europe large companies end up owning the state. Capitalism is bottom up, not top down.

QUESTION on CHINA. It seems to me that China is libertarian for small entities, w/near complete laissez faire, compared to, say, Italy or France, where the small is overregulated and the large able to play the system. China's state control applies to large entities. CORRECT?

You give "them" way too much credit! It's more like Elon says, "they" use the term Nazi to whip people up, to manufacture a mob, to foster tribalism. They might succeed in someone taking a pot shot, but it's not some masterplan involving a strategic attempt onnhis life, they just like to make things uncomfortable.

Modi is basically in awe of the West, he is exactly as he accuses Macaulay's children to be, this is what his psychological profile is. It is projection on his part and he and his advisors all suffer from the same colonial hangover. They love being in the West, love being photographed hugging Western leaders, and subconsciously wish that they were all Macaulay's children themselves. That is why Modi is in fact toothless when it comes to the West because above all he craves their approval.

India’s Escapism Since last year, clear signs have emerged of a fundamental shift in U.S. policy toward India. The indicators are difficult to ignore: the latest U.S. National Security Strategy barely mentions India; the U.S. deputy secretary of state declared from Indian soil that Washington would not allow India to grow into an economic rival; the U.S. assistant secretary of state stated that the principal objective of American policy in South Asia is to prevent any single power from dominating the subcontinent; and Washington recently dropped “Indo” from the name of its Indo-Pacific Command. These developments come amid the declining salience of the Quad and an apparent revival of the term “Asia-Pacific” at the expense of “Indo-Pacific.” The implication is increasingly difficult to dismiss. Washington no longer appears to view India’s rise as inherently beneficial to U.S. interests. Instead, it is beginning to see India as a potential economic and regional competitor whose power should be managed and constrained. U.S. interest in India is now largely focused on securing greater access to its vast market and gaining greater strategic access. The 50% punitive tariffs imposed on India last year, efforts to make India more dependent on U.S. or U.S.-aligned energy supplies, the lopsided trade framework agreement of February, and the looming bilateral trade deal all underscore these shifting U.S. priorities. Yet Prime Minister Modi appears unwilling to acknowledge the writing on the wall. This week he told President Trump that bilateral relations had “progressed significantly” since their last meeting in February 2025. In reality, the relationship has suffered a series of major setbacks during that period. Meanwhile, India’s foreign minister continues to speak of “deepening partnership across domains.” Rather than acknowledge the implications of Washington’s policy shift, the Modi administration continues to promote a narrative of deepening strategic convergence, thereby deflecting questions — and opposition attacks — about whether its assumptions regarding the U.S. have been overtaken by developments.

International relations are not analogous to you cowering before your beautiful spitfire wife. There's no police in the international arena, no social services, no divorce court, no alimony. It's a world defined by strength. If you bark, you had better have the bite to back it up. That's the cold hard reality.

No, I don't think it's pointed messaging, the US couldn't care less about messaging, my guess is that it's lazy and was intended as a compliment. People overestimate the US diplomatic corps, there's no Ambassador to India, the person appointment as envoy to the region has no diplomatic background. The US is extremely powerful and as a whole it's government has very poor PR. There are no hidden messages here.

Raw power is why. The same reason why Iran can impose a toll on those who passed through its territory, and the same reason why the UK and the US engage in maritime piracy. To oppose these actions, you need force. Russia can if it makes you, the question is how cowardly are you exactly? You're not gonna let that slide are you? They can't talk to you that way!! You should probably enlist and show those Russians you aren't a weak, snivelling pushover.

One of the most successful ideas Russia has exported is the notion that it has the right to decide the foreign policy of its neighbors. Think about it. Why should Russia have a veto over whether Georgia joins NATO? Or Ukraine. Or Moldova. Or anyone else. Are sovereign nations somehow Moscow’s property? That isn’t geopolitics. It’s colonialism dressed up as “security concerns.” Free nations choose their own alliances. Empires believe they choose for them.

You really wish someone would give this guy a job or something. Obama is a malign influence on the United States democratic system, he should shut up and go away as all modern presidents have done once their terms are completed, before people realise he's an oligarch of political capital. By interfering in the Dem party leadership, he may have been responsible for the Biden/Harris ticket and ergo the Genocide in Gaza. Actions have consequences "Barry".

There is no such thing as 'international law' in the way most people imagine it. There is no global legislature, no judiciary, and no police. "It" is mostly treaties that States honour only when they feel like it. The term international law is itself an obstacle to human progress as it misleads, and completely warps people's understanding of events - it paints power struggles as neutral 'rules', as if they are everyday laws we experience when we walk down the street or buy something. This is deeply misleading and is an impediment to solving our problems. Iran is exercising its sovereign right to control access to waters it considers part of its territory and security perimeter, especially after being attacked by declared enemies who openly aimed to "destroy" it. With no world cop to protect it, self-defense isn't optional. These are not "international waters", they are Iranian territory, and Iran reserves the right to protect itself, as does any nation. If anyone is seeking recompense for increased costs, one could in theory sue the United States Government. But that would only be possible in a system with free and functional courts that haven't been politicised or weaponised to prevent just outcomes.

A chokepoint that was once governed by customary international law is now governed by a document issued from Tehran. That is the strategic consequence of this war of choice. It will outlast the blockade, the ceasefire, and the deal. ⚓️

I think Andh Dwesh is the reason some folks are more obsessed with having a team in the World Cup than becoming a world leader in digital payments, doubling GDP, growing to Top-6 in world economy, increasing defense exports by 33x times, achieving near-100% rural electrification etc (too many to list). 😃🙏 PS: Yes, there ARE shortcomings/failings and there IS much more to do, but the list of accomplishments since 2014 IS quite large & impressive (though Andh Dweshis are blind to that). 🙏 PPS: Indians are way more into cricket than soccer. In cricket World Cups, India has been putting on a stellar show! 😃
