@IterIntellectus not going to speak to the relative dubmness, im sure there's plenty on both sides. But the american side consists of people with demonstrable experience negotiating high-stakes outcomes in a professional environment and the iranian side has a lot of experience with research

@IterIntellectus And you told once that getting a PhD is one of your main achievements in life. Strange to say the least.

@IterIntellectus Phd at least says that you have some knowledge in the domain. Real estate manager just means the person only has expertise in making money. Not fit to serve the best interest of people

@IterIntellectus Not necessarily dumb. But woefully incapable of practicality, business or negotiation. In my experience they negotiate their salary one to three times in their career.

@IterIntellectus The only thing a degree ensures anymore is a higher likelihood being indoctrinated into the Left's anti-Western worldview.

@IterIntellectus When we meet with Ph.D. and Ph.D. students, is important to remember that they don't know everything, they highly specialize in something, so they have depth of knowledge, not breadth. And don't get me wrong, they're definitely smart, but again, in what they do.

@IterIntellectus i’m honestly struggling with understanding how people think academics belong at a negotiating table. the US sent men with expertise in negotiating and war. iran sent *checks notes* do nothing PhD’s. what world do people live in?

Finished PhD, can agree. My whole view of them changed after going through it and I have been in three top 50 universities in engineering. Don’t get me started on the humanities. And nowadays it is not hard to finish, there are the worst kind of conferences with 80% acceptance rate that people end up sending their work if they fail at any meaningful conference. I literally had someone that got sent to Stanford that told me she was seedpicking to find one seed that worked when trying RL for a publication. Of course she didn’t understand what it means to cherry-pick seeds and thought it was okay. And people dividing p-hacking without understanding what they are doing. People asking why use neural networks when linear models exists, etc. I only met one smart person the entire time and we literally were each others supervisor since our professor had no understanding of what we worked with. People who can’t read code and wait half a year for you to help them. (Tbf, nepotism hire) There are people with a PhD in machine learning that don’t even know what calculus is. The list goes on and on. Even if phds were somewhat smarter on average, people forget that the distributions has gigantic overlaps.

@IterIntellectus No, this is no. If you’ve been to the Middle East, you learn quickly that their version of advanced degrees can be really watered down. Not always. This was my experience. I know many brilliant PhDs. I’m sorry if you found the dumb ones. STEM PhDs are typically next level.

@IterIntellectus Because diplomas rarely mean anything today, it’s mostly just delaying adulthood I know far too many people that went on doing Masters just because they didn’t have anything else to do in their life
