In 1985, Michael Jackson paid $47.5 million for the entire ATV catalog. McCartney has said he'd once encouraged Jackson to invest in music publishing, not expecting Jackson to use that advice against the Beatles' own work. He didn't win back his American publishing rights until 2017, when he used a US copyright law that lets songwriters reclaim their work 35 years after it was published. He was 75. In November 2023, the Beatles released "Now and Then," a song John Lennon recorded on a home demo in the 1970s and finally finished using AI to pull his vocals from the tape. It hit #1 in the UK, making the Beatles the first act in history with #1 singles in six separate decades. McCartney was 81. His estimated net worth is around $1.3 billion, making him Britain's first billionaire musician. He was knighted in 1997. Eighty-four years old today. And the most covered song in pop music history still has his name on it.
