19 September 1991. Two German hikers, Helmut and Erika Simon, are crossing the Tisenjoch pass in the Ötztal Alps at around 3,200 metres when they spot a human hand and a brown shoulder sticking out of the melting ice. They call the Austrian rescue service, who initially assume it is a lost mountaineer from the previous winter. It is, as it turns out, a man who has been dead for 5,300 years. He is Ötzi, the oldest natural human mummy in Europe, and the most thoroughly studied individual corpse in human history. Every detail has been examined. His DNA. His stomach contents. His parasites. His copper-age axe. His 61 tattoos, arranged along acupuncture-style meridians. His deerskin coat. His birch-bark containers. The arrow wound in his back. The defensive wound on his hand. The last meal, in his stomach and colon, digested but not fully broken down, frozen in situ for five millennia. The meal, per the 2018 Nature paper by Maixner and colleagues, consisted of ibex meat, red deer meat, a small quantity of einkorn wheat (possibly as a crude bread or porridge), traces of bracken, and considerable animal fat. Ibex fat specifically. By which is meant the fat of a wild mountain goat taken at 3,000 metres. No fruit. No salad. A small piece of grain. The remainder, by calorie, predominantly animal fat. Approximately half the meal by weight was fat. He was fit. He was muscled. He was walking at altitude with a bow, fourteen arrows, a copper axe, a fire kit, and a woven grass cloak. He was, when killed, around 45 years old. His teeth were ground from stone grit in the einkorn but all present. His arteries, reconstructed from the mummy, showed some atherosclerotic calcification. As do everyone's at 45, then or now, regardless of what they ate. He was shot from behind by someone he probably knew. That is a different tweet. His body was not eaten by anything for forty-five centuries, because the ice kept him. When the ice gave him back in 1991, the gut contents were still there. The menu card still legible. Published in a peer-reviewed journal. The ice did not judge the menu. The ice just kept it.

In 1954, scientists told Congress the Arctic would melt within 25 to 50 years. Then 20 years later, in 1974, Time magazine warned we were heading for another ice age. By the 1990s, when that didn't happen, warming was the returning scare, with Norway's top experts saying the Arctic would be ice-free by 2007. The Centre for Biological Diversity said it would be ice-free by 2012. The BBC said by 2013. Needless to say, they were all wrong. The Arctic sea ice minimum has actually been stable for the past 18 years now. In 2008, NASA's James Hansen predicted Lower Manhattan would be underwater by 2018 due to the burning of fossil fuels. Back in 1923, scientists claimed Glacier National Park would melt by 1950. Then in 2006, Al Gore said it would be gone by 2020. Yet today, the glaciers are still there about the same size they were 35 years ago. Decade after decade, the doomsday dates change, but the climate alarmist script persists.
