@CormacRussell Depends on what we/they are trying to do, doesn't it? If this is abt how people do things for themselves, then YES - it's abt them not us. If we're looking to involve people in what we are doing - conferences/courses we run, Tweets we post, then isn't it a legitimate question?

Again look at the question: ‘how do we get people to engage?’ With respect you don’t get ppl to engage. You listen to what they care about enough to act on, and then support them to work with others to do what they care deeply about. It’s not about getting ppl to do what we want.

@CormacRussell Maybe we need to look more at what skills/capacities people need to develop in order to proactively engage and make a difference? Maybe we could start by learning how to ask better questions that lead to people finding their own ways forward?

If it takes a village 2 raise a child. What r we doing 2 grow a village? How can we building communities that know how 2 keep all children safe? 2day much blame is being put at the feet of social workers. But what social work r we not yet doing that could make a difference? 1/5

Safe guarding has been outsourced to social workers et al, like health to doctors and safety to police. It’s become professionalized. Professionals have played a part in this. We need to shift the narrative towards a community capacity approach & a whole community response 4/5

Hear! Hear! & we're not just talking about children. Any/all of us involved in working with people are doing 'social' 'work'. & it's not just the professionals supporting others. How are we supporting communities to do it for themselves? What are the skills we use & can pass on?

@mikechitty Yes - absolutely!! The physical environment - I think things have changed for the better in some ways (you only have to remember the old Merrion House!!). But also the cultural environment. As they say, people generally leave because of managers not jobs!

@mikechitty If you are reading 'Well-being' in it's corporate context, then Yes. But ultimately, individual agency is necessary for us to be well. Being Well is also different to 'Healing or recovery' - Healing or recovery from what? This suggests there's something to heal/recover from?

@mikechitty @JohnMcArts @matty7w Salutogenesis v Pathogenesis: the well-being of a community is about health in it's broadest sense. Asset-Based Community Development is all about Salutogenesis. How do people have agency - in communities/lives/work? What are the conditions needed to enable this?

"How do we begin to shift these privileged relationships to shift resources in different ways?"...3 ABCD is all about a mindset shift and a power shift, from people outside the community/neighbourhood back to the people within. And this poses big questions.

Very interesting to hear from John & Cormac at the book launch last night. Some challenging discussion at the end around institutional power. Key snippets from John - "If we were organised, what would we be doing?" "People as powerful producers, not poor consumers."
