In football, coaches must decide which risks they want to take and which risks to avoid. On a team level, the two most important are the risk of distances and the risk of mobility. Playing with larger distances is inherently a risk, and so is playing with a lot of mobility.
Elite coaches usually go big on one while minimizing the other. Think of this as a spectrum rather than a strict either-or. For example, Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen and Ancelotti’s Madrid played with a lot of mobility but shorter distances, which helped negate the risk of mobility. On the other side, Maresca and Arteta use the full width of the pitch at all times, playing with larger distances in possession but relying on a lot less mobility.
There are coaches who try to take both risks at once, but it does not succeed consistently at the highest level. Bielsa, Postecoglou, Ten Hag, and Pochettino fall into this category. Doing so usually leads to three main issues: rest defense problems, physical fatigue, and cognitive fatigue. It would be wise for Slot to reduce the mobility and go closer to the approach he used last season.
