The Chair You Saved for No One
I stayed where I was not wanted,
thinking longing was the same as belonging.
I learned the shape of their backs
turned toward me.
I learned the sound of a door
that was never closed completely
just enough to make me think
I could push it open again.
They did not want me.
Not in the loud way.
Not with cruelty or names.
Just in the quiet way:
the unanswered text,
the plan made without me,
the laugh that stopped when I entered the room.
And still I stayed.
Arranging myself smaller.
Learning to take up less space.
Convincing myself that crumbs were dinner
if you are hungry enough.
But here is what I know now:
You cannot make a home in a heart
that has already packed your bags.

Again, call it bitterness or sh!t but I am not reuniting with my deadbeat father after 27 years because y'all preach forgiveness and my mum might have erred to justify his irresponsibility and absence. You either choose to be absent and die forever or be present in your kids life.
