I heard that Umashankar Singh @umashankarsingh was recently accused of going soft on the Congress. As his editor, I once sent him to a Rahul Gandhi rally. Uma asked such tough questions that Congress leaders manufactured excuses to avoid him for months after that.

The month.. used to get 48 when I was in college in Raipur too. Hostel without AC, coolers only in mess. We survived. Had no twitter so couldn’t tweet on atrocities against sharp engineering talent in those days against the government. One anti reservations protest left 14 students in hospital after police baton charge. But distinctly remembered there was no feeling of injustice, we felt we did our job and cops did theirs. City SP, was NIT Bhopal pass out, so we anyways felt he was our own.

Look at the reply of the guy. It’s a relative grading exam. Conditions are the same for everyone, yet these l*dus who couldn’t qualify an exam, challenge the ones who did. “I am better than you” even though the person is not qualified enough to be your peon. Dam hai to prove your mettle in the real world.

There’s an unambiguous moral gulf between killing for food and killing for ritual. When you consume, or even kill for food, the victim is a commodity. Not an individual. There’s an abstraction. When you do it as a sacrifice, that abstraction is gone. The animal is no longer a mere commodity but an individual with a personality. There’s emotional attachment. It’s family. This time, there’s trust. When after treating it thus for days, or months, you look it in the eyes and run the knife against its throat, and slowly to maximize suffering, you steel yourself and your family against the emotional cost of death. Today it’s an animal. You felt little. Do it a dozen times, and tomorrow, it’s be someone’s kid. And you’ll feel little. Do that a dozen times and one day it’ll be your own kids. As canon fodder. And you’ll feel nothing. That’s why while humans mourns the death of their loved ones, you’re able to not only not mourn the death of your loved ones, but celebrate it in the street with knafehs. When human armies press a button to launch missiles that’d kill you wholesale, they don’t feel a thing (mostly) because…abstraction. You, on the other hand, are able to do it point blank. With bare hands. Women, children, sick, pets, all alike. Those years of looking into the helpless animal’s eyes and running the blade across its throat led you to this place. Terrorists are not trained in terror camps. They’re trained right at home.

The Goat knows it was never love for him. He was fed, sheltered, and cared for only until the day he could be sold for slaughter. The Goat knows he was betrayed in the name of affection. The hands he trusted… delivered him to death. He is not crying because he is being killed. He is crying because he trusted the person with his life. An animal feels fear. An animal feels attachment. An animal feels pain. Stop killing animals in the name of religion. Stop killing animals in the name of food. Stop killing animals in the name of taste. Stop killing animals in the name of protein. Compassion is greater than cruelty. Mercy is greater than sacrifice.

It's Ravi Shastri's birthday today. And most of you probably remember him for coin tosses and 'tracer bullets.' But Ravi Shastri was a Champion of Champions in 1985 in a tournament that featured the likes of Imran, Hadlee, Kapil and Viv Richards, getting there with a phenomenal work ethic and attitude. Ravi Shastri was the first Indian cricketer to openly give back as good as he got from those sledging him, Aussies, Poms, even the fearsome West Indian pacers. He averaged 40 plus away against Australia and the West Indies with a memorable century against Roberts, Holding and Marshall at St John's and an epic double hundred at Sydeney. Ravi was the hardest bargainer before he got on to a project, but once he committed, he worked like a complete professional, and again, there aren't too many you can say that about. And he'd actually buy you a drink after as well. Have a great year @RaviShastriOfc, there are few who've done as much with what they've been given
