@AstroPnoy

A big NASA nerd who incessantly retweets almost anything space-related...from Artemis and JWST to Sagittarius A* and exoplanets. Ad astra! (I don't read DMs.)

Blue Ghost and the #PyramidOnTheMoon have arrived at the lunar surface! This is the second mission (behind Intuitive Machines' IM-1 over a year ago) to put my name and message on the Moon. Much thanks to @fireflyspace and @goLifeShip for this amazing opportunity! #AdLunam

Shortly after its 1990 launch, an optical defect in Hubble's main mirror was identified. Fortunately, it was designed to be serviced by astronauts visiting it on the Space Shuttle. Read about repairing Hubble on the blog: s.si.edu/3Aqf15Y

Apollo 16 command module pilot T.K. Mattingly performed an 83-minute spacewalk #OTD in 1972 during the return trip from the Moon. It was to retrieve film cassettes from the Scientific Instrument Module bay at the rear of the service module.

40 Eridani—just 16.5 light-years away and a fun one for sci-fi fans. @Astro.Krd captured this triple star system with a NexStar 8SE. Three stars bound together, with at least one known planet orbiting the primary. If you’ve read or watched Project Hail Mary, this system might ring a bell—it’s Rocky’s home neighborhood. Turns out, you can actually point your scope at it. 📸: @Astro.Krd

Quite fond of the direction our future is going on paper. The watch item now is to see how delivery goes.

There are no photos of Neil Armstrong on the Moon? There are actually three*! 1. AS11-40-5886 2. AS11-40-5894 (restored by @AndySaunders_1) 3. AS11-40-5903 ("unwrapped" reflection of Buzz Aldrin's visor by u/rg1213) (*Not including the ones where he's partially visible)

Damaged spacewalking glove. The Space Station gets bombarded by space rocks and debris, and is covered with small, sharp impact scars. It's easy to snag your glove on one. We pause every 45 minutes (at sunrise or sunset) to inspect for new tears. Fortunately this one didn't get through the glove's tough hide to the rubber pressure layer. Just in case, we have a small, 6000 psi backup tank to feed a leak until we get back to the airlock and plug into ship's oxygen.

A piece of 1970s hardware is still alive and pinging back from deep space. 🛰️✨ On Sept 5, 1977, NASA launched a probe - Voyager 1 to observe Jupiter and Saturn. 48 years later, it is still talking to us. Communicating with Voyager 1 from nearly a light-day away is arguably one of the greatest engineering feats in history. 🤯 Its survival is a mix of nuclear physics, extreme engineering, and clever remote surgery by NASA teams. A thread on how this 48-year-old machine is still hanging on: 🧵
