A further update from hospital on Friday evening, 12th June. Yesterday I was encouraged by the progress I had made and shared that with you. Today has been a more difficult day, and I think it is important to be honest about that too. Recovery from major spinal surgery is proving to be a marathon rather than a sprint. Whilst I was able to walk with a frame and the support of the physiotherapy team, I was unable to complete some of the exercises I had hoped to do today. Even lifting my legs sufficiently to get into the wheelchair proved difficult at times. The stair exercise also had to be postponed. As a result, my pain infusion has needed to continue to keep the pain under control. I would be lying if I said I was not feeling somewhat flat this evening. I had quietly hoped I might be home in time for my birthday, but it is becoming clear that this is unlikely. That said, I must keep sight of the bigger picture. The surgery appears to have achieved what it set out to do. Most significantly, the numbness I was experiencing in my legs has gone, and I can feel my legs properly again. That alone is a great encouragement. I suspect I may simply have tried to do too much too soon. Tomorrow I have a standing X-ray, and my consultant is not concerned. His advice to me was simple: “Give yourself some grace. You’ve been through major surgery.” Wise words. So tonight I am choosing to trust God, even while feeling disappointed and weary. Recovery will take time. There will be good days, difficult days, and days in between. I am learning that patience is now part of the healing process. Thank you to everyone who has prayed, sent messages, and supported Ruth and me during this journey. Your prayers mean more than you know.
