He wasn’t even up for re-election. You could maybe say if that was his year he’s throwing red meat to the base in South Carolina. But that isn’t what he was doing. His real focus is the Middle East - and you unfortunately have to look at everything he does through that lens.

The discipline of the Cold War forced American politicians and business to prioritize the American people - broadly, not entirely. The ‘unipolar world’ meant that American elites viewed their fellow Americans as nothing important. Trash to be discarded. They didn’t need them.

If you could save for the downpayment, affording the house would be easy because that's about 50% of the housing cost. Basically, higher interest rates rewards savers, low time preference, prudent & eucivic behavior.

At 14.5% interest and today's median income, the average home price affordable to the median buyer drops from around $240k to $160k. Prices crash. If you save about 10% of the median household income and put it in 14.5% bonds, you can have a 20% down payment in 3 years.

Boomer here. I bought my first house after ten years of saving like crazy. And the interest was 14.5%. I don’t know where kids got the idea that they were due a house and new car at college graduation, but that’s NOT how it ever was.
