@KLdivergence 2/2 AC didn't let us rebuttal. It is not just ML, people are getting very clumsy with reviews everywhere. COVID stress side effects.. perhaps!

@KLdivergence 1/2 We waited for six months for a journal that boasts 60 day reviews. I contacted the editor of journal and after few days the review came back with 2 very short (obviously last minute) and haphazard reviews plus one long grumpy one that asks for clarification.

Academic publishing can be completely demoralizing. Just this week: -on 4th revision, asked to undo work that was explicitly requested in last round -paper rejected after months-long wait based on 1 detailed, extremely positive review & 1 unpunctuated, 125 word nonsensical review

@FrankS1956 @divayc I wish more medical journals had more reasonable preprint policy. For example, I don't think ATS agrees to review a paper if there is any preprint version.

@divayc It is all there but not yet peer reviewed. Many not familiar with the “preprint” sites which post the preliminary manuscript while it is undergoing the process of peer review in another journal.

Very curious to read the full paper....

@McGnty @devon_cantwell It is not a publisher that brings respect to a journal, it is hard-working reviewers and authors and the culture and rigour of a scientific community that makes a journal respectable! It is good to know your place.

@devon_cantwell Publisher here. In the social sciences I always advise against submitting to / publishing in any OA journal unless required by a funder. But if you're already in this pickle, asking the publisher for a discount or the editor for a waiver can work.

Is it unreasonable for a professor to ask a graduate student to pay ~$700 to co-publish in an open access journal? My inclination is to say yes, but curious on other perspectives.
