Today in 1759, a British army under James Wolfe lays siege to the fortress city of Quebec. The 78-day standoff ends when the redcoats draw the French out onto the Plains of Abraham and defeat them in less than an hour. Wolfe dies in the battle but New France falls to the British.

On this day in 1898, the remote Spanish colony of Guam surrenders to a lone American cruiser. The island's defenders have no idea that their country is at war with the United States and give up without firing a shot.
